To those of us who find their racecourses repetitive and their dirt surfaces barely less offensive than their drug use, American racing offers little fascination. There is, though, something enduringly tantalising about the US Triple Crown - the more so now that its latest, ardent suitor has followed so many others in failing the critical third test.
Late on Saturday night, those not sated by Epsom watched Big Brown, the new American wonderhorse, sent off at prohibitive odds to win the Belmont Stakes and become the first since Affirmed, in 1978, to land the mystical prize.
More than 120,000 packed the New York track. They, and a huge television audience, were dumbfounded as Big Brown dropped out tamely and was virtually pulled up behind the 38-1 winner, Da'Tara.
Had he won, it would have caused a stir even in Britain - albeit nothing to rival the stir created by New Approach. Perhaps, though, the link is more genuine than might be imagined.
Luca Cumani is the latest trainer to attest there will never be another winner of Britain's Triple Crown of classics. Yet New Approach is that rarest of beasts who just might have had the talents and constitution to prove him wrong. Imagine the nose verdict in the Guineas had gone his way. With stamina to burn, he would now be odds-on for the St Leger, if his trainer could bear to embrace such an unfashionable race.

But that's the point. Had he won the Guineas, the St Leger would not even be in the first wenty races the trainer would nominate as possible targets. A horse good enough to take the first two legs of the Triple Crown has much bigger fish to fry than the St Leger.

Anyone who has taken steroids for any medical reason knows that you are supposed to taper them off rather than go 'cold turkey'. If you do, there will be a meltdown in any time of stress and the Belmont was stressful. The steroids should have been stopped after the race.

Big Brown is one of a kind. A beautiful horse who so many people love. I have followed all of his races and was watching the Belmont Stakes. I was pulling for him but I think maybe he was just tired..I have always said he is a winner and no matter what- he will always be a winner to me.-

Just another smug "commentary" from a past "power" reveling in a perceived defeat of his betters. Is this what passes for a column in the Britsh Isles? Please do better next time, as this was not worth clicking the link. Stop dissapointing us.

The use of steroids on horses must be stopped in all states. The legislatures need to have the courage to pass anti cruelty laws. Horse racing is animal abuse. If the truth about the number of horses euthanized on the track or seriously injured were made public, maybe there would be protests.
