Richard Hannon is enjoying a fine season and Paco Boy can provide him with another group-race success by landing the CGA Hungerford Stakes (3.15) at Newbury today.
He suffered his sole defeat in his past six starts when seventh in the French Guineas at Longchamp in May, but has looked a smart prospect either side of that, winning the Greenham Stakes over this course and distance in April and again showing an impressive turn of foot when landing the Betfair Cup at Goodwood. He remains open to improvement and is fancied to retain his unbeaten record over this seven-furlong trip.
The CGA Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2.40) can go to another progressive three-year-old in Donegal. Time may show that he was facing a really classy rival when beaten just a head by Conduit in group three company at Goodwood last time and, with this slightly longer trip and easier surface in his favour, he can go one better.
Cry Of Freedom, who made a big impression on his debut at Sandown Park, can follow up in the Usk Valley Stud Stakes (2.10). He powered clear of some highly regarded rivals there, despite racing overly keenly through the early stages, and this well-bred colt looks a useful prospect.
The big betting race of the day is the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Heritage Handicap (4.00) at Ripon. Those drawn high have dominated recent renewals of this sprint, and Valery Borzov, from stall 16, can continue that trend. Usually a front-runner, he seemed to benefit from slightly more patient tactics when winning at Haydock last time, quickening up well in the final furlong having tracked the early pace. A 5lb rise in the weights for that is fair and, having shown his liking for this track when a good second here in June, he looks sure to go close.
The best bet of the day comes at Newmarket, where Sleepy Hollow holds solid claims in the Lloyds TSB Cardnet Handicap (2.25). He has shown much his best form in just two attempts over this 1-mile trip, winning in good style at Windsor in May and finishing runner-up in a stronger race at Ascot 20 days ago. Only 2lb higher in the weights, he can improve past some more exposed rivals.
The Soccer Saturday Super 6 Grey Horse Handicap (2.55) is always a spectacle, with the aptly-named Grey Boy taken to come out on top. Third off a 3lb higher mark 12 months ago, he showed that he is in good form when an easy winner at Lingfield last time.
Waffle found heavy ground placing too much emphasis on stamina when fifth at Haydock last time and can show his true colours in the Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets Nursery Handicap (4.05), while The Game looks yet another to improve for a switch to the excellent Tom Dascombe and can prove too good for Marvellous Value in the Lloyds TSB Commercial Banking Handicap (3.30).
