York was abandoned because of waterlogging, but conditions could hardly be more different at Newmarket, where they were breaking course records yesterday. That is likely to swing things back in favour of Duke Of Marmalade, who is fancied to see off New Approach in a clash of the generations for the group one Juddmonte International Stakes (3.35) there today.
Duke Of Marmalade has flourished on fast ground this year, winning his four starts - all in the highest grade - in the style of a top-class performer. He showed that he has the attitude to go with his ability when battling back to beat Papal Bull in the King George at Ascot last time and, with conditions in his favour, will be hard to pass.
By contrast, New Approach would prefer some ease in the ground. A brilliant winner of the Derby at Epsom, he had previously appeared uncomfortable on firmer ground when runner-up to Henrythenavigator in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and may again find one too good.
Salsa Steps can spring a surprise in the Countrywide Steel and Tubes Hopeful Stakes (3.05). She flopped in heavy ground at York last time, having failed to last home over seven furlongs when fourth on her penultimate start in group three company at Lingfield Park. However, she has been really impressive in winning both starts over this shorter trip on a fast surface and looks a terrific each-way bet at a massive 33-1 with Ladbrokes.
Infamous Angel did not have the clearest of runs when runner-up to Jargelle in a valuable sales race at Newbury and can gain compensation in the Thoroughbred Breeders Association Lowther Stakes (1.25). She was flying at the finish there and will surely appreciate the extra furlong of this group two contest.
The Adnams East Nursery Handicap (2.35) can go to Diddums. He won with more in hand than the three-quarters of a length verdict suggests in a maiden at Doncaster last time and looks leniently treated on his handicap debut.
Relative Order looks sure to go close in the Chris Blackwell Memorial Handicap (2.00). A good winner over course and distance in June, he then failed to last home when third to Duntulm in a valuable handicap over a mile here before again emerging with plenty of credit when third from a bad draw in another hot race at Goodwood. Off the same mark, he will be hard to beat in this lower grade.
The Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur (2.10) has been switched to Goodwood, with Patkai looking a worthy favourite. He has improved in leaps and bounds this term, winning his past two starts in emphatic fashion, most recently landing the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot by seven lengths. He can enhance his St Leger claims with another victory.
The totesport Celebration Mile (3.15) could prove a muddling contest, with none of the field liking to make the running. Dubai's Touch appears most likely to take them along through the early stages, and that may swing things in his favour. He finished a good third to Fifteen Love - to whom he was conceding 7lb - in a valuable handicap over course and distance 22 days ago, worn down in the closing stages after kicking for home two furlongs out. If allowed to dominate, he may be hard to pass.
