Decision day looms for connections of Look Here, who must shine in her work tomorrow morning (Saturday) ahead of the Ladbrokes St Leger. The Oaks winner, who has not run since, must please her trainer, Ralph Beckett, to book her place in the season's final classic a week tomorrow.
Although Julian Richmond Watson's home-bred filly has been sidelined by a minor setback, Beckett remains hopeful that she will be up to challenging the colts at Doncaster. “She remains in the mix,” the trainer said. “We will know a lot more after she works, and if it all goes to plan, we would like to run her.”
Look Here's authoritative Oaks triumph marked her down as one who would thrive over distances in excess of 12 furlongs. With the St Leger run over an extended 14 furlongs, her connections' enthusiasm for the stamina test is understandable.
However, with Seb Sanders's season curtailed prematurely by injury, Beckett will have to find a replacement for the man who rode Look Here at Epsom. “We have sorted out those arrangements,” Beckett said, “but I'd like to see how she gallops before making any announcement.”
Another horse looking to book his St Leger ticket is Doctor Fremantle, who is trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Khaled Abdulla. The Derby fourth, who is due to work in Newmarket tomorrow, has not run since filling the same position in the Grand Prix de Paris eight weeks ago. “He has ticked all the right boxes so far,” Teddy Beckett, Abdulla's racing manager, said yesterday.
Beckett was speaking at Salisbury, where Abdulla's Cityscape looked one for the future after his nine-length success in the EBF Portway Novice Stakes. The son of Selkirk stepped up on his recent debut second to gallop away from Such Optimism, the winner of her only previous start.
Cityscape was well backed ahead of an apparently competitive event and Roger Charlton did not disguise his high opinion of the horse. “He wasn't anything a month ago, so we'll take our time with him,” the trainer said. “He should make a nice three-year-old and it's good to have one like him in the yard.”
Another Abdulla representative to reach the winner's circle was Intense, who obliged in a fillies' maiden in which good words abounded for several in the field. But a third winner proved beyond the Saudi patron, even though his Bouvardia was sent off at odds-on for a similar race.
Trained by Henry Cecil, Bouvardia ran with credit but met her match in Fanditha. Richard Hughes, who rode the winner for Richard Hannon, had Fanditha handy throughout before she made the first return on her €140,000 yearling price. Hannon was relieved afterwards, since Fanditha is among his most expensive purchases.
It was fitting that the Hannon-Hughes alliance should strike at Salisbury's most valuable fixture of the season. The pair have been dominant at the Wiltshire track, where so many promising two-year-olds were out in force yesterday. The pick of them was undoubtedly Serious Attitude, who made it two wins from as many starts in the six-furlong listed race.
Trained by Rae Guest, Serious Attitude made smooth headway along the inside before striking the front approaching the final furlong and dismissing Sneak Preview with ease. Guest will be hoping that she can emulate My Emma, who won the French Oaks for the trainer 12 years ago.
The Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock tomorow looks to be at the mercy of the weather. Henry Candy, whose Corrybrough is among 17 declared runners, is pessimistic that the fixture will survive the forecast rain. “It will be a miracle if the race takes place,” Candy said. “Even if it does, I have no idea how Corrybrough will perform if it came up bottomless.”
