Oaks winners have enjoyed success in the season's final classic and Look Here is strongly fancied to enhance their record by landing the Ladbrokes St Leger (3.10) at Doncaster today.
It has become unfashionable for classic winners from Newmarket or Epsom to tackle this stamina test - colts rarely attempt it as in this speed-orientated era it is unlikely to enhance their stud value - but the few fillies that have run on Town Moor in recent times have fared well, with Sun Princess (1983), Oh So Sharp (1985) and User Friendly (1992) all victorious.
Ramruma was the latest to try when narrowly failing to overhaul Mutafaweq in 1999 and Look Here, who looked an above-average Oaks winner at Epsom in June, should be hard to beat.
The form of her classic win could hardly have worked out better. Runner-up Moonstone won the Irish Oaks on her only subsequent start, while Oaks fifth Lush Lashes has since landed three group ones and seventh home Michita won the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot.
Look Here has been kept off the track by niggling problems since Epsom, but connections believe that she is back on song now. With this step up in trip likely to see her in an even better light, she rates cracking value at general odds of 4-1.
Aidan O'Brien has enjoyed a remarkable season and saddles five in an attempt to land yet another group one success. The quirky Frozen Fire is favourite on the strength of a two-length defeat of Casual Conquest in the Irish Derby at the Curragh in June. However, he is not certain to appreciate this step up in trip and looks one to take on at skinny odds.
Doctor Fremantle, fourth in the Derby at Epsom and the Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp, has been chosen by Ryan Moore ahead of stablemate Conduit. He is bred to appreciate this stiffer test, but spoilt his chance in both of those races by pulling hard in the early stages and will need to settle better if he is to last home here.
The group one Sprint Cup (2.35) - now sponsored by Ladbrokes after being transferred from the abandoned Haydock fixture a week ago - can go to African Rose.
She advertised her claims when beaten under a length by this year's champion sprinter elect, Marchand D'Or, in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville, last time when she had such as Utmost Respect, US Ranger, Astronomer Royal, Balthazaar's Gift and Assertive well adrift. Still open to improvement after only eight starts, she should confirm her superiority.
The best bet of the day is Hogmaneigh in the Ladbrokes Portland Handicap (2.05). He is in better form than his form figures suggest, most recently being unsuited by the run of the race when eighth in a similar contest at Ripon, where it was hard for horses to make ground from off the pace. His previous staying-on fourth to Holbeck Ghyll in the Dash at Epsom showed that he retains all of his ability and this slightly longer trip should be ideal. He rates excellent value at 12-1 with Coral and William Hill.
Major Cadeaux can take the National Express Park Stakes (3.45). He has run with credit on his past two starts, both in the highest grade, on each occasion shaping as though a return to this seven-furlong trip would suit him better. That, coupled with a drop in grade, can see him return to winning ways.
