With the possibility of a win fund of more than £2 million, the totescoop6 is going to dominate the thoughts of many punters today. That should not detract from a terrific card at Cheltenham, though, and Barbers Shop is fancied to provide the Queen with a rare big-race winner over jumps in the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase (2.35).
Barbers Shop has had just five starts over fences, but has already shown a smart level of form and his only defeat in his past three outings came when failing by a neck to collar Finger Onthe Pulse in the Jewson Novices' Handicap over course and distance at the Festival in March.
He has twice locked horns with Silverburn, the favourite here, and there has been little between the pair on each occasion. Barbers Shop came out on top by a short head in a bumper at Wincanton and Silverburn took his revenge by three quarters of a length when the pair were third and fourth in the Feltham Chase at Kempton last December. In receipt of 1lb, Barbers Shop rates the better value of the pair at the 15-2 offered by Coral and he can cement the new trainer/jockey combination of Nicky Henderson and Barry Geraghty.
Silverburn has to be respected, while Imperial Commander, who is unexposed, and Ouzbeck, an exciting novice, should also make their presence felt. Sky's The Limit and Il Duce make most appeal of the remainder.
Comply Or Die, the Grand National winner, makes his return to action in the Servo Computer Services Trophy Handicap Chase (2.00), but a 15lb rise for his Aintree success will make life difficult for him and preference is for Karanja. The latter is lightly raced for a nine-year-old and has clearly had his problems, but has some classy form to his name over hurdles and has a good record when fresh.
He jumped well when making a winning debut over fences at Taunton last season and would have followed up at Wincanton but for falling five out. Karanja does have his quirks, but first time out is the best time to catch him and he can make the most of the weight he receives from Comply Or Die and Halcon Genelardais.
Nicholls rarely leaves a big Saturday meeting empty handed and can saddle Pride Of Dulcote to success in the Cleanevent Handicap Hurdle (3.10). He improved massively when routing 15 rivals on his reappearance at Chepstow and can cope with this step up in class.
Vanishing Causeway can cause an upset in the Racing UK Novices' Handicap Hurdle (3.45). An impressive winner on the Flat at Galway in July, he was far from disgraced when a staying-on fifth in a slowly run race over hurdles at Tramore the following month. He should get the strong pace that suits him best in this more competitive race and can make the most of an attractive mark.
The opening Ryman The Stationer Juvenile Novices' Hurdle (12.50) can go to Starluck. Useful over middle distances on the Flat in Ireland, he landed a gamble on his debut over hurdles at Huntingdon when beating Tuanku cheekily by a neck. The way that he quickened up from the last to win with plenty in hand there was impressive and he can follow up.
Gone To Lunch sets the standard in the Sir Tristram Ricketts Novices' Chase (1.25). He showed smart form in staying hurdles last season, the pick of his efforts being a neck second to Pettifour in grade one company at Aintree in April. He finished well clear of the remainder when chasing home The Tother One over fences at Exeter and, open to improvement, can go one better.
At Wetherby, Ice Tea, a good fourth at Cheltenham last time, can make the most of an easier assignment in the £2.5 million totescoop6 Handicap Chase (2.55), while Mr Crystal, a recent winner on the Flat at Pontefract, can make a winning return to jumps in the totescoop6 Millionaire Maker Handicap Hurdle (3.25).
