Grab an Italian masterpiece for less
Clive Brittain can’t help breaking into a victory jig when the occasion demands. He did so after Misheer won at York in May - and again at Newmaket on Wednesday when the same filly routed her rivals in the ITM Cherry Hinton Stakes.
The Newmarket trainer has seen the full spectrum of racing life, having spent 23 years as a stable lad with Sir Noel Murless. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps - then pulled Murless’ secretary, who became his wife - before he set up his own show in 1972.
Now 75 years young, Brittain remains irrepressible. He exudes joy, savours each big win as though it were his last, and promptly returns to do it again.
He certainly has one for the future in Misheer. Ever the optimist, Brittain summoned the glittering career of Pebbles when contemplating Misheer’s future. He need only be half right for his latest equine messenger to lift some decent prizes.
Misheer’s nose was bloodied when she was beaten five lengths by Jealous Again at Royal Ascot. That seemed to mark her down as a cut below the best until Wednesday’s tour de force suggested otherwise.
However, Brittain offered an explanation for Misheer’s Ascot demise. The filly had a sore back in the build-up, which stopped her exercise routine in its tracks. And while excuses are ten-a-penny in racing, this one was validated when Misheer increased her superiority over the horses behind her at Ascot.
Make no mistake, Misheer is the real deal. She travelled with consummate ease on Wednesday and quickened on demand to win with authority. Her deeds earned her quotes as low as 12-1 for next year’s 1,000 Guineas.
However, two things militate against Misheer winning a seventh British classic for her irrepressible trainer.
Firstly, she is by a sprinter in Oasis Dream, out of a sprinter in All For Laura, who was by a sprinter in Cadeaux Genereux. The Newmarket mile will surely stretch her stamina. And secondly, will Brittain continue to train Misheer next season?
Since Misheer is owned by a Maktoum associate in Saeed Manana, she may soon receive the summons from Godolphin. In that event she would join her Royal Ascot conqueror Jealous Again, who was bought by Godolphin last month.
Losing Misheer would be a blow to Brittain, who has excelled with Sayyedati, User Friendly and Crimplene as well as the aforementioned Pebbles. Should that come to pass, however, one thing’s for certain. Brittain will quickly bounce back.
What makes Brittain unique is his absolute faith in horses. He will take the worst of them into his Carlburg Stables and set about improving them by tender loving care. “I train horses on the assumption that there are no bad horses, only bad people,” he reiterated on Wednesday.
Warrsan was a case in point. A nervous wreck when he joined Brittain as an unraced two-year-old nine years ago, Warrsan went on to win four group one races and in excess of £1.6 million.
While Misheer may never scale those heights, she couldn’t be in better hands.
