The fact that Kingsfort and Emerald Commander have been bought by Godolphin is one more example of Sheikh Mohammed’s determination to play once again at the top table. It seems that no amount of disappointment can jilt his love of the sport.
The sheikh’s recent purchases are both brimming with potential - in particular Kingsfort, a group one winner of the National Stakes in Ireland last month. There will be further two-year-old purchases and each new acquisition joins a string with more than its share of embryonic talent in Poet’s Voice and Al Zir.
Still to come is Godolphin’s hand-picked intake from the feeder stables of John Gosden, Mark Johnston, Michael Jarvis, and for the first time, Andre Fabre in France.
Johnston, who supplied Godolphin with its St Leger winner, Mastery, will hand over two more attractive prospects in Shakespearean and Layali Al Andalus. All of which suggests that the boys in blue will be major players next season.
It has taken the sheikh many years to build the infrastructure that now promises to serve him so well.
In the beginning he encountered hostility from trainers when he transferred horses to Godolphin’s cause. Then came the aborted experiment at Evry, in France. Now, however, all his trainers are firmly onside.
One who promises to make a significant difference is Fabre, who will almost certainly bequeath Cavalryman to Godolphin after he contests the Arc on Sunday. Fabre will also pass on several two-year-olds as yet anonymous to the British public but with promise in abundance.
Godolphin will therefore start next season having siphoned the best from literally hundreds of two-year-olds. Its personnel cannot lament a lack of equine quality that has blighted its recent campaigns in Europe.
Mind you, this is not the first time Godolphin has approached the winter with grand aspirations. However, in recent seasons it has struggled to find form in spring and early summer, when four of the five classics are contested.
Quite why is hard to fathom, since Godolphin used to land running when relocating its horses from Dubai to Newmarket in April. No longer. This has become the major stumbling block. It has put the stable on the back foot from the start.
Another sticky start this year had little to do with the quality of Godolphin’s string. After all, horses that were running lifelessly in May and June are the very same that have recently fashioned Godolphin’s recent renaissance.
So much so that this is now Godolphin’s most pressing problem. In the last two seasons its string only came to life at Glorious Goodwood, which marks the start of the second half of the season. It needs to be much quicker from the blocks.
No such chains have constrained Godolphin’s perennial rivals at Ballydoyle. Almost like clockwork, Ballydoyle hits its straps at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting and presses on thereafter.
For Godolphin to compete, it must acquire a similar sense of timing. It must be on the pace from the outset. Then, and only then, might we savour the epic duels between the two superpowers that so invigorated racing at the turn of the century.
