A failure by stadium authorities in Cardiff properly to promote the engage Super League's Millennium Magic event could lead to it being switched next year to Edinburgh, with the RFL also giving consideration to scrapping the concept of derby matches in favour of a seeded draw.
Several coaches have been critical of the derby format and advanced the idea of a draw as a fairer means of trying to ensure more competitive fixtures than a preponderance of one-sided encounters during the first two years of the event in Cardiff.
The RFL has a three-year agreement with the local authority and Visit Wales, the Welsh Assembly's tourism team, but only a one-year commitment to the event at the Millennium Stadium, where the combined 63,144 attendance on Saturday and Sunday amounted to a modest increase on last year's 58,831.
Ticket sales were mostly conducted through the RFL and by the 12 clubs, while the stadium began selling tickets only four weeks ago, despite the event ploughing about £10 million into the local economy. The net result of the stadium company's lack of promotion, and continued complaints by supporters of inflated hotel prices in Cardiff, could be a move to Murrayfield, which hosted the Challenge Cup final in 2000 and 2002.
The Scottish Rugby Union wants to increase usage of Murrayfield and representatives of the Scottish and Irish tourist boards attended the weekend's event, with Dublin and Belfast viewed as other potential locations.
It would be ironic, though, if the Bridgend-based Celtic Crusaders were to be granted a three-year Super League licence when the successful franchises are announced in July, that the event is taken out of Wales. The noises coming from the RFL are as much a warning shot to the Millennium Stadium authorities to sort out their act, or risk losing potentially a greater money-spinner next year.
The likelihood, too, of 14 teams in an expanded competition from 2009 would involve seven matches and a possible extension to a third day.
— Castleford Tigers are trying to put together a sponsorship package to retain Dwain Chambers after his recent month-long trial and reserve-team appearance. Chambers will discover today whether he has a future there. “He's done remarkably well, but really needs another six to nine months to get to grips with rugby league,” a spokesman for the sprinter said.

Cardiff hotels like all hotels inflate prices for bank holidays and special local events. After 2009, and after the Crusaders get to know their fate move it to anywhere but Scotland or Ireland - the fans pay the wages along with Sky. Keep the format and move it to Birmingham - right in the middle.

I fail to see the attraction. I've been to Cardiff when the stadium is full, that creates an atmosphere! To sit with over half the stadium empty and the roof closed in a feable attempt to create some kind of noise is ridiculous. This event could take place at any one of around 30 football stadiums!

My friends and myself have just returned from Cardiff and had a wonderful time. Wales has a longstanding connection with ruby league and it would be detrimental to the weekend if the venue was moved. We certainly would not attend if the venue was anywhere else. We feel sure other fans would agree.
