Stanley Gene will be available for Hull Kingston Rovers’ home sudden-death play-off against Wigan Warriors on Saturday, after the Papua New Guinea international, 35, escaped suspension for grabbing the face of Brent Webb, the Leeds Rhinos full back.
Gene was found guilty by the RFL disciplinary committee last night of behaviour contrary to the spirit of the game during Rovers’ 44-8 qualifying play-off loss to Leeds last Friday — an offence punishable by a ban of up to four games — but got off lightly with a £500 fine.
Meanwhile, Hull KR completed the signing from Leeds on a two-year deal of Michael Ratu, 21, the Rhinos’ reserve-team player of the year.
Gary Hetherington, the Leeds chief executive, confirmed that he will play a part in deciding the club’s qualifying semi-final opponents on Friday week under the contentious “club call” system. As top seeds, Leeds will select on Sunday from the winners of the Hull KR and Wigan match and Friday’s tie between Huddersfield Giants and Catalans Dragons. The team not picked by Leeds face St Helens away.
“We will have a strategy for deciding who we choose,” Hetherington said. “Myself, Brian [McClennan, the head coach] and the coaching staff will decide on who our pick will be.
“The players aren’t bothered who we play, because they know that every team will be extremely tough just 80 minutes away from Old Trafford.”
Nathan Brown, the Huddersfield head coach, said: “We all want to be part of club call. It’s definitely different, something I’ve never seen.”
