England crashed to an embarrassing 36-0 defeat — their biggest in World Cup history — as they made their hopes of a successful Webb Ellis Trophy defence look very unlikely against South Africa at Stade de France.
The reigning world champions had endured a difficult week, losing skipper Phil Vickery to a two-match ban, while fly-halves Jonny Wilkinson and Olly Barkley missed out through injuries, meaning that former Great Britain rugby league captain Andy Farrell and 35-year-old Mike Catt taking on huge responsibility as England's principal midfield backs.
Elsewhere, Jason Robinson moved from wing to full-back instead of Mark Cueto, while South Africa-born prop Matt Stevens replaced Vickery.
The Springboks were also missing key men, without suspended flanker Schalk Burger, meaning a call-up for Wickus van Heerden, and Francois Steyn took over from Jean de Villiers in midfield.
Farrell's left boot swung the game into action, but South Africa made the early in-roads and took just six minutes to ease in front.
Wing JP Pietersen evaded England scrum-half Shaun Perry's tackle, and although support runner Fourie du Preez was ankle-tapped by Robinson, flanker Juan Smith supported superbly to claim a quality try. Full-back Percy Montgomery, who equalled Joost van der Westhuizen's South Africa cap record of 89, slotted the conversion for a 7-0 lead, sounding immediate alarm bells.
England were off the pace, and Steyn compounded their woes by booting a 45-metre penalty after 10 minutes that left England already facing a mountain of Himalayan proportions.
It was a nightmare start for the world champions, whose worst fears had already been confirmed by a Springboks side hell-bent on smashing them beyond repair.
England's first scoring chance came when Catt rifled a 14th minute drop-goal attempt wide, and there was already a sense of desperation in the ranks.
The Springboks' high tempo shunted England on to the back foot, and there was little captain Martin Corry could do about it.
As against the USA in Lens last Saturday, England created little, lacking imagnnation that meant South Africa were simply able to pick up the pieces and continue dominating after half-time.
Montgomery increased South Africa's 20-0 lead through a 46th-minute penalty, and, knowing the game was won, they were content to play a territory game, pinning England back and looking to take their chances. Pietersen added another try, and Montgomerie kicked the rest.
Coach Brian Ashton tinkered with his side, sending on Andy Gomersall for Shaun Perry, flanker Lewis Moody for Tom Rees, and George Chuter for Mark Regan, but his problems were compounded when Jason Robinson, by far England's best player, was forced off the pitch and possibly out of the tournament with a hamstring pull.

Was at the Stade de France this evening - inept, unimaginative, lacking in skills and pace. These words best sum up the worst perormance by a "full" England team in my memory. The quarter finals are seriously in doubt for this team. That said, the Boks were pretty average so wuldn't back them either!

Embarrasing - total humiliation but I'm sue the RFU will be happy given all the money they have made from fans following the team. Plenty of cash for a good bash in the west car park. SA were good but never have I seen an England team - in any sport - so disorganised and not care - aart from Jason Robinson who, at less then 6 foot (5' 8'?), stood tall. Well done Jason you are a legend. The problem is the rest - including the idiots who run the RFU - are a bunch of southern softies. No desire to win. A total embarassment. Next time don't bother pulling on an England jersey. I wouldn't even mid if we'd had a big punch up, stuck one on a couple of the Boks and been send off!! Soft!!!! Rubbish!! Its about pride, passion and fronting up - something my 5 year old by has in spades and was asking why we were loosing tonight - shameful.

What was the game that the people in green were playing? It seemed to me that no one told the English players what the new game was, and they were flustered.
God help them if they are matched against Oz. That is if Samoa does not hand them their lunch pail.
Desmond Taylor, Houston, USA Tx
Utterly abject performance - if they had any pride they would be ashamed of themselves but since they don't, they won't.
These players are apparently 'professionals'! If I conducted my profession with the same incompetence I would quickly be unemployed.
England is the world's largest and richest rugby nation and they cant even score a single point. A single point!!!
Pack up the bags and go home now to save further embarassment. They, and I include the blazers at club and RFU level in 'they', are a complete and utter disgrace.
Put limits on the foreigners in the Premiership now, fire everyone from Ashton up and start again. Who knows, England might even score a point come the 2015 WC.
In the meantime, concede Samoa the victory and go back to the shires because this 'team' doesn't deserve to be there.

Moment of the match: The Springboks treating Jason Robinson with respect, allowing him to go down with the injury and not smashing into him.

...headless chickens from start to finish. I cannot recall a game in which England have lost so much possession and not a a single chance to score. We have got zero points before but have we ever not had A SINGLE scoring chance?
The Bok's high ball game plan paid off although Jason Roinson dealt well with most, England's game plan? I didn't notice one...kick it back to them where SA can use it to good effect again - the only god thing for England was that SA weren't really on form, they played well but can play better: MOTM du Preez
