Everybody’s talking about Jonny Wilkinson (yet again). Here, his teammates, coaches and opponents give their view of England’s talismanic fly half.

Mike Catt I said to him at the beginning of the game, I said: ‘Jonny, this is Jonny Wilkinson’s time now.’ He hasn’t performed well over the past two or three weeks and he’ll admit that himself but when the chips are down, the man stands up. It’s incredible, absolutely incredible. Again, it was his day today. He’s the man. This is why he is who he is. What can you say? He’s done it again.

Mike Ford (defence coach) Watch him play, keep an eye on him, honestly, he is everywhere. If he’s not down the short side, he’s reading it and getting on the open side. And he can read the play so well, he’s in the right position at the right time. His reading of the game is phenomenal.

Toby Flood It’s exactly the same at Newcastle. You don’t have half the world watching you there, I guess, so people don’t appreciate it as much. He’s the kind of guy who always plays like that, always displays the composure and the ability he’s got. He’s a fantastic guy to have around.

Martin Corry When you’re down their end and you know you need to get something out of it and he’s called the play, it’s up to every one of us to get on and do it. He was calling the dropped-goal routine and we just had to make sure we got as close to the posts as possible and gave him the ball he wanted. He’s a world-class player but has such a world-class head.

Phil Vickery What could I say up here that hasn’t already been written? He is a great rugby player. He gives the team confidence. Today he missed a couple of kicks, but we ask him to get difficult ones; he’s not always going to get them. If you had to put your mortgage on it, he’d be your man. He duly stepped up to dink it over like it was a Sunday afternoon stroll.

Raphaël Ibañez You have to recognise Wilkinson’s cool. He showed in those important moments that he is a great player and that’s all you can say about it.

Rob Andrew (RFU director of elite rugby) Jonny has changed quite a bit in the past three or four years. He’s much more relaxed about his own game, more at ease with himself. He has probably missed more than he would have liked and there are some reasons for that, but he hasn’t let that affect him. I personally think it would have affected him more in the last World Cup. This time he has just dusted himself down and just got on with it.
