Bryan Habana, who joined Jonah Lomu as the leading try-scorer in a World Cup tournament, has won the IRB player of the year award. The South Africa wing received more votes than the Argentina pair, Juan MartÍn Hernández and Felipe Contepomi, Richie McCaw (New Zealand) and Yannick Jauzion (France) and is joined, inevitably, by Jake White, of South Africa, as coach of the year and the Springboks as team of the year.

Jason Robinson’s participation in the game at Twickenham on December 1, between the Barbarians and South Africa, is in doubt after he dislocated his right shoulder. “I feel now that Saturday’s game could have been my last,” Robinson, who will retire from all rugby, said yesterday.

Bernard Lapasset, the head of the World Cup’s organising committee, admitted that security “was not up to the standards we expect” after a fan wearing an England shirt ran on to the pitch minutes before the presentation ceremony. “We have looked back at what happened on the video, and we will look exactly at the conditions in which it happened,” Lapasset said.
