Andy Robinson could become the next coach of Scotland after the country's tour to Argentina in June. Robinson, Brian Ashton's predecessor as England head coach before being dismissed by the RFU 17 months ago, has moved a step closer towards what would once have seemed the unlikeliest of appointments by agreeing to become the forwards coach under Frank Hadden, the head coach, for the two-match series against the Pumas.
With the Scottish Rugby Union promising a review of its management structure after the trip, Robinson, who has enjoyed a renaissance as head coach of Edinburgh, is in pole position to take over from Hadden. The caveat is whether he would want to. For now, Robinson, who has coached Scotland A and helped with the senior side's preparations before their victory over England in the RBS Six Nations Championship last month, will continue at the helm of Edinburgh.
The SRU has relieved George Graham and Alan Tait of their coaching roles in favour of Robinson and Sean Lineen, the former Scotland centre who is head coach of Glasgow Warriors. Lineen takes control of the backs.
Yesterday's announcement came after the SRU's review of Scotland's disappointing Six Nations campaign, in which they finished fifth. “I believe that now is the time to freshen up my management team,” Hadden said. “They [Robinson and Lineen] are two top-quality coaches and there is no doubt in my mind that they will bring tremendous experience.”
The SRU is looking at alternative employment for Graham and Tait, but the pair could make a return to Newcastle Falcons. Steve Bates, the caretaker director of rugby, is discussing his future with David Thompson, the club's owner, and his chances of staying on may not be high after his team's seven successive Guinness Premiership defeats. Graham and Tait were members of the Newcastle side who won the Premiership title in 1998.
Jim Mallinder, reported to be in the frame to be the next England backs coach, has said that his future remains as director of rugby with Northampton, who have won promotion back to the Premiership next season.
The RFU confirmed yesterday that Jonny Wilkinson will miss England's summer tour to New Zealand because he needs a shoulder operation.

It has occurred to me that English Rugby, always notorious for an apparent arrogant and dismissive air, has been unhappy of late with the decline of this trait since 2003 and are looking to re-energise this to the point of ensuring opposition coaches have all tasted the arrogance of our RFU.
