Marcus Di Rollo, the Scotland World Cup player, who has been unable to play club rugby this season because of a dispute over his heart condition, will get a chance to relaunch his international career with the national A team that is competing in the Churchill Cup in Canada in June.
Di Rollo’s problem is that though he is known to have a heart murmur, the medical advice in Scotland is that it is safe for him to play, but after moving to Toulouse last summer, the French club decided it was too risky and refused to pick him. As a result, after joining Toulouse straight from the World Cup, he has made only one brief appearance as a replacement.
The situation has echoes of Barry Stewart, the former Scotland prop, who was diagnosed with a neck problem and cannot now play in or for Scotland, even though he turns out every week for Northampton and has even kept Euan Murray, the Scotland tighthead, out of the starting XV.
At least Di Rollo will get the chance to play some rugby this season after failing to win selection for most of Scotland’s World Cup games and then being refused the chance to play at Toulouse. However, he will find the competition tough in a youthful A team led by Fergus Thomson, the hooker, who narrowly missed out on a place on the full international tour to Argentina, with Max Evans suggesting that he could be the prime candidate for the outside-centre berth.
The senior squad’s problem with locks has had its effect on the A team, with a place still to be filled. Fergus Pringle, of Edinburgh, and Dan Turner, of Glasgow, are selected for now, but there was good news for the two team managements with Craig Hamilton due to be given a run off the bench for Edinburgh at Llanelli tomorrow, with a place on one of the tours available should he come through.
He is joined by Allan Jacobsen, the Scotland prop, who aims to show he has recovered from the groin injury that has kept him inactive for the last two months, and Mark Robertson, who has missed most of the season with a shoulder problem.
That game will also see Phil Godman celebrating his decision to resign for Edinburgh on another two-year deal. On the other side of the equation, Augusto Allori, Alistair Warnock and Andrew Maxwell are leaving the club. Allori is heading back to Italy, Warnock is joining Doncaster and Maxwell is retiring from the game.
