Steve Borthwick will captain England on their New Zealand tour next month. The Bath lock has been handed leadership duties in the absence of Phil Vickery, who misses the matches against the All Blacks in Auckland and Christchurch with a knee injury.
Borthwick, capped 37 times, has recent experience of the role after acting as captain for England's RBS SIx Nations victory over Italy three months ago. He takes charge of a 32-man squad - the first of Martin Johnson's reign as England manager - that includes six uncapped players.
The newcomers are Danny Care, the Harlequins scrum half, Jason Hobson, the Bristol prop, Dylan Hartley, the Northampton hooker and London Irish trio, Topsy Ojo, David Paice and Nick Kennedy.
Vickery apart, other absentees who took part in the Six Nations campaign include Jonny Wilkinson, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, Simon Shaw and Mark Regan.
But the major selection casualties appear to be Gloucester backs Iain Balshaw and Lesley Vainikolo. Balshaw started all five of England's Six Nations games, while Vainikolo, the former Bradford Bulls wing, made his debut off the bench against Wales and kept his place for the remaining four fixtures.
Paul Sackey has been named in the squad despite suffering a knee injury during Wasps' Guinness Premiership victory over Leeds Carnegie at the weekend.
Vickery could return to action for Wasps in the Guinness Premiership final - should they qualify - but Johnson and Rob Andrew, the RFU's elite rugby director, were not prepared to risk him in New Zealand.
“Phil is trying desperately hard to play again this season but we felt it wasn’t the right call to go on an arduous tour,” Johnson said. “Simon Shaw has got a number of medical issues as you would imagine after a long career and long, long season. We felt it was best if he had a good off season and got himself in the best shape for another long season next year.
“It gives opportunities to other guys in that position to get into the number four shirt and establish themselves. If we come back from New Zealand with guys we know we can trust to play international rugby, it puts us in a position of strength.”
The All Blacks have lost to the European club game key players such as Carl Hayman, Luke McAlister and Chris Jack. Johnson still expects a tough challenge but he is confident England will be competitive.
“It is as tough a tour as you will ever go on, going to New Zealand,” he said. “They have lost a lot of players but there never been a bad All Black team in the history of the game.
“They will have a few guys in there who weren’t starters in previous seasons but they will all have international experience and they will be a formidable side.

No Haughton in the best 60+ players in the country is a really poor decision. Also Foden should be going to NZ, when he learns he'll be England full back for the next 10 years he'll realise his potential. But generally a decent squad
NickB, London,
Joe Worsley in and no Magnus Lund!
Thats a big mistake.
roger Kingston, york,
Ok for everyone who is seems to have missed the several thousand bullitins. JSD is Injured! He hasn't been left out he couldn't tour!
Chris, Coventry, UK
Living here in NZ, I can tell you NZ Rugby is in a lot of turmoil. Player defections, fans massive unrest, give England a real hope. When NZ appointed Graham Henry and his crew coaches again, an enormous lot of NZ fans hoisted the protest flag, and have bagged the establishment ever since.

Is this the same plodding Mike Brown who was skinned twice on Saturday by Tom Varndell who makes the...er...B team?! Oh dear got that one wrong.
Rob, Warfield, England
Still no Josh Lewsey!!!!!!! Hopefully the Ashton era has not rubbed off on Johnson. Why isnt Pat Sanderson considered - great captain who has had a great season. He was always played out of position for England. Time will tell!!!!!
Matthew Shaw, Newcastle, England
I feel sorry for James Simpson-Daniel yet again. It seems another England coach doesn't seem to think he's good enough. Shame. I think Ben Foden would have been a better call than Mike Brown at the minute too. Still, an encouraging start with the new caps. I look forward to the first test in NZ.
John Cashman, Harlow, Essex
no lewsey...again. whats the guy got to do? varndell a bit unlucky too, but i think ojo deserves a shot.
but so so glad balshaw isn't in the squad. good on you johnno.
hopefully with cipriani and barkley at 10 and 12, we'll be playing a flatter game.
George, Plymouth, UK
Forwards OK - you can argue the toss on a couple of places
Backs - apparently selected on form. If the saviour incarnate was not injured then there would have been four backs selected from just-saved-from-relegation Newcastle.
All sorts of inform players playing for clubs challenging for honours
Alistair Stobie, Moscow,
Probably very wise to leave Grewcock out of the tour as he seems to have picked up the habit of being sent of in N.Z for dirty play
Gareth Williams, Powys,
So the NZRU payed for a couple of "legal experts" to find out what happened in the world cup. NZ lost beaten by a better team. The End. Expert? Ex is a has been and spurt is a drip under pressure.
Gary McAlea, Edinburgh, Scotland
Johnny im really not quite sure what your getting at. Are you even a rugby fan? This is the strongest squad available after players with injuries have been discounted! With maybe one or two players you could swap around based on personal preference.
Chris, Coventry, UK
PLus why do we deserve a hiding? Because New Zealand were cheated out of their God given right to win the world cup? Grow up and don't cry into your beer when we beat you!
Chris, Coventry, UK
Wow, Johnson hopes England will be competitive. That's ambitious or is it just realistic. We thought the IRB was making yousend your strongest team. Sounds very much like England are hoping not to be given what they deserve, an effing hiding. It's such an arduous tour as well, all that travel, gosh
