Wasps will meet Leicester in the Guinness Premiership Final in a fortnight at Twickenham.
Lawrence Dallaglio has the perfect finale to an unbelievable career and Leicester, the reigning champions, who once stood at seventh place in the table, have a chance to retain their title.
If it sounds dramatic enough, then few words could adequately express the full range of triumph and disaster encountered on Super Sunday, in the semi-finals.
Indeed, it was probably one of the most bitter sweetest days in the proud history of Wasps, because the emphatic march of Dallaglio's men was marred by a severe injury to the young prodigy, Danny Cipriani, who was caught in a tackle, and earliest indications are that he has broken his ankle, possibly with further complications, and he could well be out for the rest of the calendar year.
By the end of a sensational and agonising match at Adams Park, Wasps had come through 21-10 with a quite wonderful combination of skill and sheer heroism in adversity - they also lost wing Tom Voyce and prop Tim Payne to injury, and by the end were down to their fourth choice fly-half and their third choice hooker.
Wasps trailed early on after a mistake by Josh Lewsey conceded a try to Alex Crockett but the Wasps response was majestic. In the next six minutes, they played probably the most brilliant rugby seen anywhere this season, scored tries through Fraser Waters and Riki Flutey and went in ahead.
Bath gave it the kitchen sink, they had more territory and possession. But just when Wasps were wavering again after the departure of the unfortunate Cipriani, Wasps came again with a third stunning try, after a brilliant angled run by Tom Palmer. And they held out to win 21-10 amongst emotional scenes.
However, we did not know at the time that in terms of drama, the day was only just beginning. Gloucester went in front by 25-23 after a tumultuous game and with only four minutes remaining but two minutes after that, Andy Goode kicked Leicester into the final with a staggering late drop.
It was another game of quite magnificent intensity and skill and at the end, Gloucester could only rue bitterly their own naivety. They were the better side for most of the match, they led by 15-6 just after half time and then after a brilliant try by James Simpson-Daniel made by Akapusi Qera, they led 22-13 going into the final quarter.
A team with just a little more experience of these situations and just a little more composure, would most certainly have sealed it but Gloucester dithered horrendously. They gave Leicester a try for nothing when a suicidal pass from Iain Balshaw in the general direction of Willie Walker, simply wafted into space and Aaron Mauger scored the easiest try of his career at the posts.
Ryan Lamb, not consistent under pressure, was recalled after crossing the Gloucester line on the end of a forward pass, but a penalty from Goode put Gloucester ahead as the final exchange of penalties completed the scoring.
It was an afternoon that had everything. Probably, even those who believe that the Champions should be that team finishing at the top of the table after the regular season, had to be thrilled by these two gargantuan matches. It is now even possible that Leicester may start favourites because they are finishing the season fresher and with far fewer injury problems than Wasps.
But Dallaglio and Wasps are best when beleaguered. They have two weeks to patch up the team in mind and body, their defence in the big games is sensational, and who would really be confident in betting against Dallaglio going out with a trophy. What an amazing day, and how fervent will be the best wishes of followers of any team, for the stricken Cipriani.
