Argentina are in danger of losing one of their winning team for the second international against Scotland after it emerged yesterday that Santiago Bonorini, the tighhead prop, is under investigation for a possible headbutt about half an hour into Saturday's match. Scotland could also lose players with three of their team carrying injuries from the game.
Alan Mansell, the citing commissioner from England, has until 10.10pm tonight [6.10pm in Argentina] to decide whether to charge Bonorini but if he does the prop could be in danger of missing not only the return match in Buenos Aires on Saturday but his country's game against Italy the week after. It is understood the commissioner is looking at an incident around the 30th minute, presumably the confrontation between the Argentina player and Johnnie Beattie, but a decision is not expected until sometime today.
The Scotland injuries are harder to assess and James Robson, the team doctor, would only say that Dan Parks is being checked for an ankle injury, Simon Danielli for a swollen knee and Scott MacLeod for a dead leg and all would be looked at again before training today to see what chances they have of being fit for Saturday.
Before then, the coaches accept that they have a lot to work to do to conquer the problems at the breakdown, though Andy Robinson, the forwards coach, is hoping that a quiet word with Alan Rolland, the referee for the next game, will solve one issue - the way that Argentina were allowed to creep over the offside line before pouring in on Mike Blair, the scrum half, to stifle Scotland's best attacks.
“It was all about Argentina being very smart on the offside line, offside and not getting picked up,” he said. “If you don't get picked up you keep doing it. That was one of the frustrating things for us, in terms of the role of the touch judge, two or three of those were right in front of the touch judge. And it was disappointing that when we had quality ball and stretched them we were getting turned over.”
The problem Scotland has to solve in camp is the way that players kept running on their own, without real support, and after getting isolated, they were easy pickings for the Argentina forwards.
For Sean Lineen, the coach, there was a lot of quality passing movements but a tendency to start them so far behind the gain line that they were always going to leave Scotland on the back foot. “Argentina like it when the ball is on the deck, so it is up to us to keep it off the ground,” he said.
