Another incredible fightback by the men from Selkirk sees them sitting proudly in the top group of the early Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership table, a point behind Watsonians, the other big weekend winners.
Had Fraser Harkness, the full back, held on to a scoring pass from Alex Duncan, the 18-year-old making his debut, or if a try had been awarded either time the forwards were ruled to have failed to ground the ball when over the line, they would have been level with the Edinburgh club.
After more than a decade bumbling around in the lower reaches of the second division, Selkirk have a team built around local talent - 13 of the starting side in their 25-24 win at Glasgow Hawks came through the club’s development system - and the spirit that goes with it.
Kevin Barrie, their coach, praised the local unity that has allowed the side to recover from substantial half-time deficits two weeks running. “We again showed a lot of character,” he said. “To come to Glasgow and come away with a result builds on that. The boys have been brought up together and when we do go behind, heads don’t go down, we keep fighting.”
Martin Murray, the prop, scored two of the tries, but the pick went to Eddie Gauche, the lock, finishing a move that had started 90 yards away when Hawks, who were fielding four 17-year-olds, dropped the ball going for a try themselves.
Watsonians edged above them, squeaking through a seven-try thriller against Heriot’s, collecting a bonus point on the way. It could have gone either way but sterling defence allowed Watsonians to survive their visitors’ late onslaught and hold on for a 35-28 win.
West of Scotland could not sustain their dream start at Melrose, going down 19-11, and there was a big shock as Boroughmuir, the champions, crashed 37-17 at Currie. Edinburgh Academicals scored in injury time to snatch a 29-25 home win over Stirling County, and Ayr were rarely in trouble as they won 17-11 at Hawick.
