Danny Cipriani has been given the all-clear to play again by his surgeon and provided he does not suffer a setback over the next few days the England fly half will, as revealed in The Times on Monday, be free to make his comeback against Bath on Wednesday.
James Calder, who operated on Cipriani four hours after after the injury on May 18 that left his right ankle hanging at 90 degrees to his leg saw the player yesterday and gave him the all clear. For the past two and a half weeks he has undertaken non-contact training and this week taken full contact for the first time with no adverse reaction.
Prav Mathema, the London Wasps head physiotherapist who has been overseeing Cipriani’s day-to-day treatment, said: “James and I are a 100 per cent happy with where he is. It is now a selection issue.”
Under Mathema’s guidance, Cipriani has made a remarkable recovery and is ready to come back and stake a claim for consideration by England for the November internationals, two months ahead of schedule.
Mathema said this was due to several factors, not least the player’s incredible determination and focus to return to the game he loves. “People might have got the wrong image of Danny with pictures of him in the papers with Kelly Brook,” he said. “We have talked about it with him, but only a few people at the club know how hard he has worked to get back to where he is now.
“It has helped that his is only 20 and has not got a degenerative ankle. On top of that he is an elite sportsman and very strong willed. Good direction and treatment have also played their part.”
That Mathema was able to put the ankle back straight on the pitch was also significant. “It is important in any injury, to get it back in place as quickly as possible so the soft tissue can be sorted out. Danny’s injury was pretty horrendous.”
For the first two weeks after surgery at the Lister Hospital in London, Cipriani had his leg from knee to toe encased in a ’back slab’ half plaster. During this period he used a muscle stimulator on his quads to ensure there was no wastage. “That is essential to ensure a quicker recovery,” Mathema said.
After that Cipriani spent four weeks in a light plaster cast doing upper body weights. From early July he was in a removable air cast boot similar to that David Beckham used when recovering from his broken metatarsal. “He had intense physio every day,” Mathema said. “We hammered him to get mobility into the ankle.”
The next stage involved walking during which Cipriani stepped up strength and mobility work. He began jogging in early August and then progressed to running at the club and with Margot Wells, the wife of the former Olympic sprinter. “It’s been a sharp upward gradient ever since,” Mathema said.
