Danny Cipriani has been given the all-clear to play again by his surgeon and, provided he does not suffer a setback, the England fly half, as revealed in The Times on Monday, will be free to make a comeback for London Wasps at home to Bath on Wednesday.
James Calder, who operated on Cipriani four hours after he suffered the fracture-dislocation to his right ankle on May 18, saw the player yesterday. For the past two-and-a-half weeks Cipriani has undertaken non-contact training and this week has taken full contact for the first time with no adverse reaction.
Prav Mathema, the Wasps head physiotherapist who has been overseeing Cipriani's day-to-day treatment, said: “James and I are 100 per cent happy. It is now a selection issue.”
Cipriani's remarkable recovery enables him to stake a claim for consideration by England for the November internationals, two months sooner than expected. Mathema attributed this to several factors, not least the player's determination and focus.
“People might have got the wrong image of Danny with pictures of him in the papers with Kelly Brook [the model],” he said. “Only a few people at the club know how hard he has worked. It has helped that he is only 20 and has not got a degenerative ankle. Good direction and treatment have also played their part.”
That Mathema was able to put the ankle straight on the pitch during the match against Bath was significant. “It is important to get it back in place as quickly as possible so the soft tissue can be sorted out,” he said. “Danny's injury was pretty horrendous.”
For the first two weeks after surgery at The Lister Hospital in London, Cipriani had his knee to toe in a “back slab” half-plaster and used a muscle stimulator on his quadriceps to prevent wastage. He spent four weeks in a light plaster cast doing upper-body weights and from early July wore a removable air cast. “We hammered him to get mobility into the ankle,” Mathema said.
Cipriani began jogging in early August and progressed to running at the club and with Margot Wells, the speed coach who assists several leading players. “It's been a sharp upward gradient,” Mathema said.
