When it comes to derby matches, there are few more local than the one when Watsonians meet Boroughmuir. But there is much more at stake today than bragging rights across the Colinton Road in Edinburgh. Both sides have forged a reputation for attractive, attacking rugby, and both are in a position to overtake Ayr should the Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership leaders slip up at home to West of Scotland.
For the second time this season Watsonians are having to bounce back at home from a disappointing performance on the road, but last time the flop was followed by a flourish and they are aiming for a repeat showing today after their second-half collapse against Selkirk a week ago.
With the Premiership clubs having accepted in principle an offer from BBC Alba, the new Gaelic channel, to broadcast a selection of matches, there could be more than kudos at stake. Inevitably, any television coverage will focus on the matches where there is something at stake, and the last thing either club wants is to find themselves lurking in anonymous mid-table and missing out on the profile and publicity that will go with the broadcasts.
Watsonians have few injury problems but shuffle their back division after last week's disappointment to bring more pace to a three-quarter line that must have been among the quickest in the division anyway. Boroughmuir, the champions, have a few niggles but hope to be able to stick largely to the side that defeated Hawick last week.
Selkirk could have to demonstrate their comeback capabilities yet again when they take on Heriot's at Goldenacre. The other focus of interest is at the foot of the table where Stirling County, in last place and still looking for their first win, take on Glasgow Hawks, one place ahead of them after gaining their first win last week. Elsewhere, Melrose take on Currie and Ian Barnes, the Edinburgh Academicals coach, takes his side to Hawick, his old club.
