Sale Sharks will be without Kristian Ormsby, their New Zealand import, for Sunday's Heineken Cup clash with Munster. Ormsby, the back-five forward who has made such an impact since his debut for the club last month, was suspended for one week by a European Rugby Cup (ERC) disciplinary panel yesterday and will miss the vital home game against the holders.
On a busy disciplinary day at ERC headquarters in Dublin, it was another blow that Sale, who can appeal, could have done without, though a charge against Rudi Keil, the Sharks centre, was dismissed. But the pugnacious Ormsby, a combative force at lock or blind-side flanker, was found guilty of a dangerous charge against Julien Pierre, the Clermont Auvergne lock, in Sale's 32-15 win on Saturday.
A charge of striking Pierre was dismissed, as it was for Keil, who was found guilty of foul play for tackling Benoît Baby without the ball but not, the panel considered, deserving of a red card. Keil will be available for Sale, who have registered David Ward for Europe. Ward, the former England Under-21 hooker, joined only this week from Northampton and replaces Sébastien Bruno, the France hooker who will be out for about five months with a ruptured bicep.
Byron Kelleher, also the subject of a disciplinary hearing, in which a stamping charge from the narrow victory over Bath on Sunday was dismissed, has been named at scrum half in the Toulouse side who play Glasgow at Firhill in the Heineken Cup tonight. Toulouse need to make their mark in pool five but have come unstuck in Scotland before - against Edinburgh five years ago.
Toulon have named Jerry Collins in their back row to play Bristol at the Memorial Stadium in the European Challenge Cup tonight and the former New Zealand flanker will captain the side who leaked 56 points at home to Northampton last week. Ramiro Pez, the Italy fly half, will also play against a Bristol back line that includes, on the wing, Tom Arscott, who was forced off the field away to Montpellier last Friday after a heavy tackle by Justin Marshall.
London Irish, who have noted Connacht's outstanding recent form in wins over Dax and Leinster, take a strong XV to Galway with only one change - at hooker, where James Buckland replaces Danie Coetzee - so Peter Hewat remains at fly half.
Jonathan Thomas, the Ospreys back-row forward capped 46 times by Wales, must undergo surgery today on a groin injury that has been worsening during the season and will miss next month's international series. Thomas, 25, was examined by his region's medical staff on Wednesday and an operation was recommended, which will keep him out for six weeks.
