Geordan Murphy was given another chance to resurrect his international career yesterday after being recalled to the Ireland team to play Argentina at Croke Park in Dublin tomorrow. Declan Kidney has turned to Murphy, 30, who has 58 caps, for the first time since taking over as head coach.
The Leicester back is chosen for Ireland's final match that will determine their World Cup seeding in his preferred position of full back in place of Girvan Dempsey, his long-time rival, who has been dropped and is one of three changes to the side that lost 22-3 to New Zealand. The promising back, Keith Earls, remains on the bench. Jerry Flannery comes in at hooker, in place of Rory Best who is a replacement, to complete an all-Munster front five. Stephen Ferris slots into the back row for Alan Quinlan, who has been suspended for three weeks for stamping in the match against the All Blacks. An appeal against that decision will be heard today. If successful, Quinlan will be a replacement.
Kidney said Murphy, who was often out of favour or injured under Eddie O'Sullivan, Kidney's predecessor, is the man for the occasion. “He is a good reader of the game,” he said. “He has his strengths and has been around that long that everyone knows what he can do.”
Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe leads Argentina at Croke Park in the absence of Felipe Contepomi, who has an infected cut on his right hand. Miguel Avramovic is one of five changes for the Pumas, coming in for Contepomi, and there are recalls for Francisco Leonelli on the wing, Horacio Agulla at full back and Juan Manuel Leguizamón at No 8.
Neemia Tialata has recovered from flu to play at tight-head prop for New Zealand against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff tomorrow. But Corey Flynn, the reserve hooker, has been forced out of the tour having broken a bone in his left arm against Munster on Tuesday evening. Hikawera Elliot, who joined the touring team after Andrew Hore was forced home, replaces Flynn in the 22.
In this evening's two Guinness Premiership games, Luke Narraway is fit to play for Gloucester against Bristol at Kingsholm. The No 8 pulled a hamstring against Cardiff Blues in the Heineken Cup last month, an injury that forced him out of the elite England squad. Lesley Vainikolo, the out-of-favour England wing, makes way for Matthew Watkins. Bristol recall Luke Arscott and Darren Crompton. Matt Powell is the one change that Worcester Warriors have made for their match against Newcastle Falcons at Sixways Stadium.
