Danny Cipriani's growing tendency to be charged down is as much to do with the teams in which he plays as any flaws in his technique, according to Dave Alred, the world-renowned kicking coach.
Alred, the expert who transformed Jonny Wilkinson and who now coaches Cipriani privately, said that London Wasps and England have no kicking alternatives at present to the 21-year-old fly half, which made it easy for opposition teams to target him.
“Danny has had a lot of flak about being blocked,” Alred said. “But you have to have a serious look at the teams in which he is playing which have only one kicker. I don't think Danny has a fundamental problem. But he has to be systematic about his practice regimes.”
Jon Callard, the England kicking coach, had suggested that one solution would be for Cipriani to adopt an Amercian football “snap kick” routine. Alred cautions against this. “I would be very reluctant to look at something that speeds it up and only creates complications down the line,” he said. “There are other ways to solve it than simply being quicker. It is a 15-man game and others have to share the responsibility.”
Alred, England's kicking guru under Sir Clive Woodward from 1997 to 2005, admitted that Cipriani needed to work hard to iron out faults and could not rely on his ability alone.
“His biggest challenge is repetition. People naturally do not like repetition,” Alred, who has worked with Cipriani since the fly half was a member of the national academy, said. “But great performers have become great because they have repeated a lot of skills work in a very pressurised and accountable environment. Great players make it look easy.
“He is a wonderful talent and if he is in an environment in which he is managed well, there is no question that he will be incredible. Talent is not always enough. Some players make up for a lack of natural talent by working very, very hard. Some talented individuals rely on that. When you get the two together you produce a champion. Look at Wilkinson.”
Alred coaches at Saracens and Munster, as well as with high-profile individuals. He said that the value of having kicking options was illustrated in England's 2003 World Cup-winning side, who possessed a back division all of whom - from scrum half to full back - could kick, adding: “It isn't always the most comfortable thing to do, but they worked on it.”
Eddie Jones, the Saracens director of rugby, agrees. “Having a specialist kicking coach is vital nowadays,” he said. “We saw the value of a kicking coach in 2003. It took the pressure off Wilkinson. Jason Robinson had a pop-gun kick of 20 metres when he started. By the end, it was 40 to 50 metres. England should re-employ Alred. They don't have that many world-class coaches to ignore one of his calibre.”
