Analysis:
David Hands
Martin Johnson, the England team manager, has picked the uncapped Ben Foden
and recalled Mike Tindall and Mark Cueto for the RBS Six Nations
Championship.
Foden, the Northampton player who can play at full back or scrum half, is part of a 32-man group that includes five changes to the England elite squad that Johnson named in July. The 23-year-old replaces Peter Richards, of London Irish.
Cueto, the Sale Sharks wing, replaces Olly Barkley while Tindall, the Gloucester centre, takes over from Dan Hipkiss. Ugo Monye, the Harlequins wing, replaces James Simpson-Daniel, and Nick Easter, the Harlequins No 8, is preferred to Jordan Crane.
Olly Morgan, the Gloucester full back, is also in the squad, while Johnson is considering injury replacements for Wasps forwards Tom Palmer and Tom Rees, who are both in the squad but are currently sidelined from competitive action.
"We have made changes on form," Johnson said. "Cueto is in great form. Mike [Tindall] at Gloucester also brings us some experience. Lewis Moody was always in the squad but was injured in November and he is in pretty good form.
"Foden we have known about for a while. He went to a new club in the summer. I think it is the right time now. He is instinctive, a very good player and a fantastic athlete as well."
Johnson confirmed Steve Borthwick will continue as captain. England begin their Six Nations campaign against Italy at Twickenham on February 7. The squad will head to Portugal on January 25 for a week's training as part of their preparations.
Delon Armitage, the London Irish full back, officially replaces Josh Lewsey, who retired from England duty after being overlooked in November.
Barkley, Crane and Simpson-Daniel drop down to the Saxons squad, which also included veteran Leicester prop Julian White, who has not been involved with England since making himself unavailable for the 2007 World Cup. White comes in for the injured Jason Hobson while Worcester's promising young prop Matt Mullan comes in for Jack Forster. In-form Harlequins duo Jordan Turner-Hall, the powerful centre, and No 8 Tom Guest have also been included along with Wasps hooker Rob Webber.
The Saxons play Portugal on January 30 and Ireland A on February 6.

A a Welshman I'm so pleased that the English coaches don't see JS-D in the same light we do. The one truly world class back in England not even in the senior squad? Thank heaven.

knocker, bridgnorth, england
Glad to see Foden finally in there
JSD - injured I think only reason why he's missing
Cueto?! Despite all the talk of him in good form I still don't think he should be pulling on an England jersey
Borthwick shouldnt be in the squad let alone captain
Shame to not see Jon Clarke - in great form
Ollie, Birmingham,
Tindall? Again? 6 years after the RWC win he's slow and old. Where's the youth, the look to the future? Great, Foden's in, but still Noon, Shaw, Vickery etc.
We need a new broom after the embarrasment of the Nov. games. Who cares if the young guns make a few errors learning, can't be any worse.
David, St Albans, UK
Interesting that Ben Foden left Sale to play regularly at his preferred position of scrum-half at Northampton, even though Phillipe Saint-Andre said that full-back was his best/natural position and that he could play for England there.
I agree with Tom - Steffon is the form openside at present
Greg, Manchester,
Emily & Charlotte,
Good selection, I like your team. Personally I would have Moody at 6 and Steffon Armitage at 7 and probably Delon Armitage at 13 but other than that I could live with it.
Tom, Worcester, England
why is simpson-daniel not in the squad? he is englan'd best back by a huge margin and has more talent in one foot than cipriani, flutey or noon will ever have
dave, london, uk
Given the restrictions of the EPS scheme, this looks like an astute selection. Retaining the injured Palmer and Rees means he can make some form-based selections at lock and 7 during the 6N.
All the replacements are genuine potentials for the matchday 22. But Borthwick as captain? Not for me.
Ben, London, UK
Hello
We are Emily & Charlotte & this is the team we want to see:
15 - Foden
14 - Cueto
13 - Tait
12 - Flood
11 - Sackey
10 - Geraghty
9 - Care
8 - Haskell
7 - Moody (captain)
6 - Croft
5 - Shaw
4 - Kennedy
3 - Payne
2 - Mears
1 - Vickery
YEAH.
Emily & Charlotte, enfield, uk
The thought of facing Toby Flood won't have the opposition quaking in their boots. And Lewis Moody is back to give away some more dumb penalties. The daft things Care, Flood, Easter and Monye did in the Xmas Quins v Leics match made me hold my head in my hands. These are the best we have?
Martin, London,
