Lee Byrne - one of the Lions more assured backs but unnecessary knock-on near the end could have cost his side the match. 5

Leigh Halfpenny - worked hard to get involved but lack of fluency inside gave him minimal opportunity and his long-range goal-kicking skills were ignored. 5

Keith Earls - took his try well but part of a physically small midfield which failed to impose itself when the game became looser. 5

Luke Fitzgerald - not his favourite position, a couple of good tackles but no sign of the attacking thrust he has shown from the wing at home. 5

Shane Williams - hopes receding fast of playing in the internationals, form a distant shadow and his loose pass gave Cheetahs their last try. 4

James Hook - solid display when it was needed and kicked all his goals on a day when the Lions needed him to. 6

Harry Ellis - worked hard behind a pack of forwards who were turned over too often for comfort and established a good understanding with his fly half. 5

Andrew Sheridan - ploughed forward ball in hand, made his tackles and maintained a good standard where others drifted. 6

Ross Ford - looked useful ball in hand but his throwing to the lineout was wayward. Part of a big pack that did not establish an anticipated advantage 5

Euan Murray - involved in an early fracas but badly needs another outing if he is to push for an international position. 5

Donncha O'Callaghan - consistent ball-winner at lineout but less of a force in the loose, which was evident before the tour. 5

Paul O'Connell - used to carrying the ball up for Munster and Ireland but well held here and the second-row combination is all to play for. 5

Stephen Ferris - worked hard to compensate for his expensive period in the sin bin, best of a back row badly outplayed by the Cheetahs. 5

Joe Worsley - a couple of trademark hits but doubtful if the Lions can turn him into the open-side flanker they want, as England did. 5

Andy Powell - offers himself endlessly to do the same thing and opponents know it. Tackled to a halt and turned over too frequently. 4

Replacements: only four used, Matthew Rees, Adam Jones, Nathan Hines and Gordon D'Arcy, and none for more than 20 minutes.
