South Africa v Lions - how they rated

How the South Africa team and the Lions fared in their first match in Durban

Stephen Jones, Rugby Correspondent

South Africa

Francois Steyn (Sharks) 7

Fine footballer, though sometimes the body is trying to catch up with the brain. Far from infallible and his simple error led to the first Lions try.

JP Pietersen (Sharks) 6

No chance to show what he can do, which is a lot. South Africa hardly used their backs once as a weapon.

Adi Jacobs (Sharks) 6

He was badly adrift in defence, and as a result it could be that Jaque Fourie returns for the Pretoria match as the Boks try to cope with Jamie Roberts.

Jean de Villiers (Stormers) 7

It was odd that he was carted off, because whatever midfield defence the Boks could muster seemed to disappear with him.

Bryan Habana (Bulls) 5

Once tackled when at top pace by none other than prop Gethin Jenkins. The question must be asked - is the dynamite man fading?

Ruan Pienaar (Sharks) 8
