Neither Gethin Jenkins nor Adam Jones, the Wales props, will be available for the final match of the Lions tour, against South Africa at Coca-Cola Park next weekend.
Both were taken to hospital in Pretoria after the brutal international at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, Jenkins with a fractured right cheekbone that required the insertion of a plate, and Jones with a dislocated right shoulder.
They become the fifth and sixth players to be invalided out of the tour after Stephen Ferris, Euan Murray, Leigh Halfpenny and Lee Byrne.
Jenkins, the Cardiff Blues loose-head, will be out of the game for up to eight weeks and Jones, the Ospreys tight-head, for anything between three and nine months depending on what his region’s medical team find when the swelling has gone down.
It is as well that John Hayes and Tim Payne arrived last weekend to bolster the dwindling front-row resources, although Andrew Sheridan and Phil Vickery are likely to start the final international.
There still remains a long casualty list — the most notable of them Brian O’Driscoll, who suffered concussion in a clash with Danie Rossouw. But neither he, Jamie Roberts, Ronan O’Gara nor Tommy Bowe have been ruled out of selection.
O’Driscoll must undergo the usual protocol after a blow to the head, but if he comes through a cognitive test, he will be considered. X-rays showed that Roberts, his midfield partner, has not suffered a fracture to his right wrist but James Robson, the Lions doctor, said that it remained possible that further damage could be discovered.
O’Gara suffered a cut to his left eye and Bowe a painful blow to his elbow but the Ireland players should have recovered in time.
“It’s not the biggest casualty list I’ve had, but it’s one of the most distressing ones in that we’re losing two of our most colourful characters, the two props,” Robson said.
Should the first-choice centres fail to recover, the Lions can draft Riki Flutey, Gordon D’Arcy or Keith Earls, although Luke Fitzgerald has also played centre on this tour.
