Dan Carter could miss New Zealand’s next game against Italy in Milan after being cited for an alleged dangerous tackle on Martin Roberts, the replacement scrum half at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.
Carter will face a disciplinary hearing in Milan today chaired by Jeff Blackett, the RFU disciplinary officer who has been appointed by the IRB. If found guilty, he would receive a minimum one-week ban. Carter, who had been a doubt for the match against Wales because of injury, kicked 14 points during the All Blacks’ 19-12 victory. He was cited by Scott Nowland, the Australian match commissioner.
Graham Henry, the New Zealand head coach, may be happy for Carter to have an enforced rest before games against England, France and the Barbarians. Henry has said that he will use all 33 of his players on the tour.
Roberts was uninjured and refused to blame Carter for what appeared to be an accidentally high challenge, rather than a deliberately dangerous tackle, that cut short a rare Wales attack. Carter apologised afterwards but that did not stop him being booed.
“Things like that happen in games, and you just have to take it on the chin,” Roberts said. “It looked bad, but I was fine.”
Wales play Samoa on Friday with groundstaff racing against time to sort out a playing surface that cut up badly in the match against New Zealand. Leigh Halfpenny, the Wales wing, called it a mess. The pitch was saturated after a blown fuse prevented the roof from being closed for two days.
