Andy Murray has been seeded ninth for next week's Australian Open. The 20-year-old's seeding reflects his current world ranking, which he achieved following victory at the Qatar Open last week.
The British No 1 is finalising his preparations for the year's first grand-slam event at the AAMI Classic in Kooyong. The Scot revealed how a change of tactics helped him turn his match with Ivan Ljubicic around.
Murray appeared to be heading for defeat against the Croatian after falling a set and a break down, but he reeled off 12 of the final 15 games for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
With neither player able to reach the final of the eight-man invitational event after both lost their opening round-robin matches yesterday, this match was viewed as ideal preparation ahead of next week's Australian Open.
"It was obviously hot but I didn't feel too bad actually. Your legs feel it, but I didn't feel too tired. I felt okay," Murray said. "I've been doing a lot of training since I got here so it took a little while to get my legs moving. He [Ljubicic] has such a good serve and hits a lot of balls in the middle of court which you have to anticipate, so maybe that's why it looked like I wasn't moving."
After winning the first set in a close tie-breaker, Ljubicic raced to a 3-0 lead in the second as he looked to stamp his authority on the contest. But Murray had other ideas, rushing the net more to take the advantage away from his opponent.
"I didn't have too much chances to do it in the first set, but when I got down to 3-0 in the second, I started coming in a lot and it worked well," Murray said.
He won the next five games to take control, before closing out the set 6-4.
Ljubicic's struggles continued early in the third set, taken to deuce on five occasions before eventually winning his opening service game. An excellent backhand passing shot gave Murray a 3-2 lead before he closed out the next three games to claim victory.
