Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
Andy Murray says he will be available for Davis Cup matches in future after pulling out of the tie with Argentina today. Murray has assured John Lloyd, the Davis Cup captain, of his commitment after both he and Jamie Murray, Andy's brother, expressed their disappointment at his withdrawal from the match in Buenos Aires.
The Scot has also confirmed he will be available for a quarter-final in April, should Britain upset the odds and beat Argentina, or a play-off in September if they suffer the expected defeat.
"I've spoken to Andy and we had a good chat," Lloyd said. "He said it's a one-off and he's available for our next match, which is great news."
"I told him on the phone I was sorry for him because this will be a great occasion whatever happens and told him I felt he had the ability to win both matches."
Jamie Murray admitted he was shocked about his Andy's withdrawal, but Lloyd revealed he did not think there was a problem between the Murray brothers. "You have a few little disagreements but the bottom line is you're brothers," Lloyd said. "I don't think there'll be any problems in the future, we're all a bit frustrated about this match but we're moving on now.
"They have a great relationship, you only have to look at the way Andy reacts when Jamie's playing - he's more nervous than anyone. That's what being brothers is about. You're going to have a few little niggles but the bottom line is we're all going to be fine."
Jamie Baker, Great Britain's No 3 will face David Nalbandian, the world No 9, in Friday's opening rubber. Baker, ranked 235, will have to cause a massive upset to get the better of Nalbandian on clay in Buenos Aires.
The second singles rubber on Friday will see Alex Bogdanovic take on world No 41 Agustin Calleri. Jamie Murray and Ross Hutchins are scheduled to play Nalbandian and Jose Acasuso in the doubles on Saturday, before the reverse singles fixtures on Sunday.
Andy Murray's absence means Britain go into the tie with Bogdanovic their highest-ranked player at 188. But Lloyd expects the contest in front of a partisan crowd to provide a memorable experience for his players. "I've talked to the captains of the Australian and Swedish teams [John Fitzgerald and Mats Wilander, respectively] who played here recently and they told me it's a very passionate and noisy crowd," Lloyd said. "However, we have to take it as a unique experience, something you will never repeat. When you pick up a tennis racquet for the first time, this is a thing you wish for, something that you can tell your grandchildren: 'I was in Buenos Aires, playing in front of a huge crowd going crazy and I loved it. I had fun and it was great'.
"During my playing career, I played against [Ilie] Nastase in Romania with thousands going crazy. We lost the match but I will always remember that match for the atmosphere."
The British captain is delighted with the clay courts at Parque Roca but is aware the surface does not favour his team. "It is a lovely court, great stadium and the surface is very similar to Roland Garros; the speed of the clay is very similar and it's lovely to play on," he said. "But we, as a British team, are not expert on this surface. Andy Murray plays well on clay as he lived in Barcelona for four years, but then he is not with us."
