Andy Murray made it into the second round of the Open 13 in Marseilles with a straight-sets win over Dutchman Jesse Huta Galung.
Murray angered his brother Jamie and John Lloyd, the Great Britain team captain, by electing to miss the World Group tie against Argentina in Buenos Aires, a match Britain lost 4-1.
But the 20-year-old, in action for the first time since a first-round defeat at the Australian Open to finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, showed no signs of the knee injury that kept him out of Davis Cup action in completing a 6-4, 6-4 win.
The 11th-ranked Murray, who used to share a flat with Huta Galung when they were both based in Spain, struggled to dominate his 190th-ranked opponent in the first set.
The first four games of the opening set went with serve, but the next five saw breaks traded between the pair before Murray finally held to close out the set.
The second set was going with serve but in game eight Murray fought back from 0-40 down, winning the next five points to hold serve thanks to his sixth and seventh aces of the match.
Murray then took the second of three break points in game nine before serving out the set to complete a 6-4 6-4 win in one hour and 11 minutes.
In the second round Murray will meet the winner of the match between Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka.
