Andy Murray said yesterday that he is not too worried about his present world ranking after he fell out of the top 20 for the first time in 20 months.
The Scot's second-round defeat by Mario Ancic, of Croatia, at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami last week, saw him fall to No 22, but he remains in the top ten of the ATP Race, which reflects performances in the calendar year, after tournament victories in Marseilles and Qatar.
“I'm not really panicking that much about it,” Murray said yesterday. “I said a couple of months ago that my ranking's going to go up and down a bit. I've been in the top ten last year and that was obviously great. I want to try and get back there.”
Appearing relaxed and cracking jokes about the quality of the baked potato he had eaten for lunch, Murray said he had not set himself any specific target. “I've got high expectations of myself,” he said. “I expect to be in the top ten and I try hard to do that. The pressure that people put on me is fine because I expect to be there myself.
“I just want to win some matches on clay, improve my game and then by the time the French Open comes around I'll be more confident.”
Murray announced on Friday that he had brought Alex Corretja, the former world No2 and twice runner-up at the French Open, into his coaching team to help to prepare for the clay-court season.
“Because I missed so much of the clay-court season last year I think it's important to have someone of his experience, just to get back to the basics and the movement,” Murray said.
