Rafael Nadal says the physical demands made on the world's top players is ruining the game in Europe, and has called on the ATP to stop ignoring their pleas.
The French Open champion believes the clay-court season, in particular, is taking its toll, and has called on tennis administrators to consider the players when they plan the tournament calendar, rather than basing their decisions purely on financial gain.
Speaking after a second round victory at Open Sabadell Atlantico in Barcelona, the world No2 said that it was unfair to expect the players to maintain a peak over a month or more and claimed that a string of high-profile withdrawals should be blamed on the authorities and not on the players.
"These people are destroying Europe." Nadal said. "No one is listening to the players. You cannot keep a top level over four weeks. We have to thank the people who decided the calendar, for what they've done to us and to the tournaments. Look to them when players cannot finish matches. When a player pulls out of an event, the tournaments should ring the ATP, not blame the player."
As he prepares to defend his French Open title for the third time, Nadal explained that people should not always reach the latter stages of tournament
"I have to assume that I will not always be able to get to the final. The only way I have survived so far in Barcelona is because it's a place where the fans are so great, they treat me like a rock star."
Earlier this season, the majority of world's top ten signed a petition asking the ATP board not to automatically renew the contract of Etienne de Villiers, who has been architect of the ongoing calendar row.

So Rafa's words were prophetic...he's out of Rome due to a nasty blister impeding his movement (and some great play from JC Ferrero), unable to take any break between tourneys. Definitely time for a change at the ATP. Surely it's not good for the game if the King of Clay goes out in the first round?
Karen, London,
I agree with Rafa. They can't play the whole May month without stopping and besides all the matches on clay-curt. In addition, three weeks later of this, they have to prepare Wimbledone, the most wonderful tournament, and they don't have time to rest. In brief, the ATP has to be more understandable
Viktor, Madrid, Spain
yeah he is defending it for the 3rd time
He defended it in 2006 and 2007....He didnt defend it in 2005 cos he hadnt won it the previous year.
Craig, Manchester,
Errr, Lulu - yes, Rafa has won it 3 times, but he wasn't defending it the first time he won it. So he's looking for his 4th victory, but his 3rd defense!
Marc, London,
Good on you Rafa. Well done for speaking out on behalf of the European players who are slogging it out on the clay and trying to defend their rank points. Shame on the ATP, who are clearly not acting in the players best interests and yet so quick to act if a player 'isn't trying hard enough'.
Jenny, London, UK
Tennis is nothing without its athletes. If they are saying that the schedule is too physically demanding, and there has certainly been an increase in injuries and players withdrawing from matches in progress, then THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE SCHEDULING. Listen to the Players!!!
Doreen, Anaheim, USA
Umm...Rafa is looking to defend his title at FO for the 4th time. He has 3 (2005, 2006 and 2007).
