Tony Trabert (United States, right-handed) 20pts
b 1930 Cincinnati , Ohio
Champion 1955
Semi-final 1954
Trabert was an outstanding athlete, who played collegiate basketball for the University of Cincinnati. His backhand was a potent weapon and he was a dedicated serve and volleyer, but was often underestimated by opponents. He won Wimbledon, the French Open and the US Open in 1955 and became the world No 1 amateur that year, winning 18 tournaments. His Wimbledon title was achieved without the loss of a set – a record he shares only with Don Budge, Chuck McKinley and Bjorn Borg. Trabert became a professional in 1956 before going on to become a commentator, coach and motivational speaker.

Alice Marble (United States, right-handed) 20pts
b 1913 Beckwourth, California d 1990 Palm Springs, California
Champion 1939
Marble changed the face of the women’s game by becoming the first lady to serve and volley. She collapsed at Roland Garros in 1934, suffering from pleurisy and tuberculosis, but battled back to become a triple champion at Wimbledon just before World War II. Many say she would have been the ultimate champion had it not been for the war. She married Joe Crowley, a pilot, who was killed in action in Germany . She attempted to kill herself after a car accident caused her to have a miscarriage but recovered to work as a spy for US intelligence.

b 1939 Mannheim

Semi-final 1963; 1964
Bungert was a finalist in 1967 as an unseeded player. He was only the second German player to do reach the final, 30 years after Gottfried von Cramm. Bungert beat Roger Taylor in five sets in the semi-final but lost in straight sets to John Newcombe in the final. He was also a semi-finalist in 1963 and 1964. He owns a tennis and golf centre in Hilden and is today perhaps most famous for having an adidas shoe named after him.

Shriver is perhaps best remembered for her ladies’ doubles exploits, in which she won 21 grand-slam titles, 20 of which when playing alongside Martina Navratilova. But Shriver also reached the semi-finals of the singles at Wimbledon on three occasions, in 1981, 1987 and 1988. Shriver is one of only six women in the open era to have won more than 100 career titles. Her love affair with Wimbledon continues through her commentary work for the BBC during the fortnight.
