What did you make of Venus Williams's performance in reaching her seventh
final?
After the first set, you began to fear that it would a bit of an obliteration.
But Elena Dementieva tends to have these matches where she can be so bad and
then can suddenly be pretty good.
For a little while there, it looked as though she might be able to give Venus a match. In the tie-break she just made a couple of ground-stroke errors on crucial points and Venus hits the lines at crucial moments and she did it again.
It was just a thoroughly professional performance by her.
And what do you think of the prospect of another all-Williams final?
Though they deserve it, matches between them are never the most satisfactory.
I don't go along with the theory that their matches are decided beforehand,
it's just ridiculous that you could tell one player to play well and the
other not to.
It's just a little unfortunate because it takes a bit of the edge of the
competition, because there is always a sort of lingering, not suspicion as
such, but people are concerned that it is not all-out. Whereas with other
matches and finals you are sure.
Rainer Schuettler and Arnaud Clement are into a fifth set in their
quarter-final but can the winner beat Nadal tomorrow?
What are they doing? They are wearing themselves into a frazzle only to be
probably pole-axed tomorrow. But I suppose there is a lot of money to play
for as the losing semi-finalist, but I can't imagine either of them would
trouble Nadal in his current form. He is just playing remarkable tennis at
the moment.
Can Marat Safin trouble Federer in the other semi-final?
My mind goes back to the semi-final of the Australian Open in 2005, when Safin won the match 9-7 in the fifth, playing absolutely awesome tennis.
I don't think Marat is without a chance. It would need him to be at his very
best and Roger not to be. But if you look at the other side of the coin,
Federer has won every match in straight sets and has almost coasted into the
semi-finals. Safin is one of those players that, on his day, is right up
there so it has all the makings of a memorable match.
Has anything else caught your eye?
I saw a bit of the British girl Laura Robson in the juniors, she won again today. Clearly she is a player we are going to have to keep our eyes on. She has a great game, a lovely attitude and looks the part. And we'll see, but's it's very encouraging to see a British player with such confidence, control and maturity for a 14-year-old. It's very interesting.
