Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak helped their playing partners to win doubles trophies on Sunday, but only a day later they were banned from the sport for betting on matches as tennis's anti-corruption measures snared more wrong-doers.
It was announced yesterday by the ATP, the men's governing body, that Cermak, the 31-year-old Czech, and Mertinak, 28, of Slovakia, will be suspended for ten and two weeks respectively, having been found to have placed bets on matches over a period of five months in Cermak's case and one in Mertinak's. They were fined $15,000 (about £7,500) and $3,000 respectively. An investigation discovered that neither player wagered on his own matches and no evidence was found of any intent to affect the outcome of the matches on which they placed bets. But these are troubled times for a sport taking ever tougher measures to protect its reputation against those willing to use inside information to enhance their income.
Cermak, who won the ATP title in Amersfoort in the Netherlands last weekend with Rogier Wassen, the Dutchman, will not be able to play in next month's US Open. He is No34 in the doubles rankings and Mertinak, who lifted the Croatian Open title in Umag on Sunday with Petr Pala, of the Czech Republic, is No37.
Alessio Di Mauro, of Italy, returned to the circuit last month having served a nine-month ban for betting. He said when his sentence was handed down: “I made a silly mistake and I'm being punished excessively. I could go down in history as the only player banned for betting in tennis.” He was wrong.
