Andy Murray will target Olympic Games and US Open glory after clinching the biggest title of his career.
The British number one climbed to a personal high of sixth in the world rankings after beating Novak Djokovic in two tie-breaks in the final of the Cincinnati Masters Series event last night.
Murray will be Great Britain's representative in the singles tournament at the Olympics in Beijing, where the likes of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will also be competing for medals. He will also team up with his brother, Jamie, in the doubles event.
Djokovic had beaten Nadal, the Wimbledon champion and world No 1, in the Cincinnati semi-finals, but for the second time in a fortnight Murray got the better of his fellow 21-year-old.
"I've beaten Novak twice in the last couple of weeks now and he's obviously played great all week," Murray said. "It gives me a lot of confidence going into the Olympics and US Open."
The Scot is determined to improve on his record at the highest level, having reached his first grand slam quarter-final at Wimbledon. Murray believes the sixth tournament victory of his career is a sign he is ready to improve on that record, with the US Open following the upcoming Games.
"It's huge. Masters Series titles are so huge to win," Murray said. "I played five matches in five days in this sort of heat against guys like Novak, [Carlos] Moya and [Ivo] Karlovic. They're all tough matches. It's a great test physically and all the work off the court is paying off.
"I've got to try to stay grounded and get back to the gym and practice court, and make sure I don't get too ahead of myself because I've only made one quarter-final at a slam and never gone deeper than that, and that's got to be my next goal."

what a player andy murray is dont reallly care what the swiss or english think of him to be honest
raymond, dunfermline, scotland
Bjorn Borg was not exactly the most personable tennis player - and what about McEnroe? Those people who cannot look at the talent but only the personality are so short sighted. Britain has so few top sports individuals so come off it people. Give Andy all the support he deserves. Read his book!
MArgaret Kerr, Forfar,
Can take no pleasure for this country at his success, agree with previous comments he really is an extremely unpleasant young man. His behavior on court is embarrassing to watch. He should not be encouraged by the crowd (as he was at Wimbledon) to behave in such a loud manner. Grow up or go away.
Joy, Durham, UK
Excited? He was absolutely knackered. He isn't in the least unpleasant, unless you count a gritty determination to win as a character fault. With tennis talent like that, who cares about image? The gentlemanly Roger was even more of a rough diamond than Murray at the start of his career.

Murray's game has matured appreciably over the last year, and his attitude (and facial hair) will no doubt improve soon too. I look forward to further improvement from Murray, a Federer resurgence, and 3 or 4 favourites slogging it out in the next grand slam.

I agree with Chris in Berne - Andy Murray always comes over as a rather unpleasant young man. As a life long follower of tennis I find it extremely difficult to support him. Perhaps Roger Federer could give him a few lessons on how to be a gentleman sportsman.....
Richard, Sandy, UK
He a great talent and breath taking to watch. I like his ambition and I feel he could rise to 2nd but unless Nadal injures himself its unlikely that top spot with be Andys. I hope he nails it though. Oh and He could sound a bit more excited when he wins!
Andy Billington, Preston, UK
Is good that he's doing so well. It's a shame though that he makes it so difficult to like him! Isn't he meant to have someone helping to improve his image?
