Andy Murray eased into the semi-finals of the season-ending Masters Cup with victory over Gilles Simon, but once again it is his volatile language on court that attracted more attention than his tennis.
The British No 1 could be heard repeatedly swearing during the opening set of his 6-4, 6-2 victory in Shanghai as he became increasingly frustrated by a string of unforced errors. The commentary team were forced to apologise twice in the opening games of the match as Murray could be heard using a string of four-letter expletives.
Murray led the first 5-0 after breaking his French opponent twice, but the Scot wasted a series of chances to win the set as Simon pulled to within a game at 5-4. Murray soon overcame his mid-set wobble to seal the set with an emphatic service game.
Murray saved three break points at the start of the second set, before he turned the tables on Simon to break serve himself and take a 3-1 lead. As the French No 1 continued to make errors, and Murray capiltalised to seal victory in one hours and 33 minutes.
"He's tough," Murray said. "I just had to try and stay focused at the end of the first set.
"I had a chance to go 5-0 up and I didn't take it, and he got some confidence after that. But I knew I had to keep making him move, and eventually he started to break down. He made some mistakes in the second set and I capitalised."
Murray was not asked to comment on his outbursts during the match, but it is not the first time the world No 4 has courted controversy for his behaviour.
In August, Ken Cunningham, general secretary of School Leaders Scotland, said Murray should show more respect for officials after he was seen mouthing expletives during his US Open final defeat by Roger Federer.
While, in May the Scot was heard swearing during a match with Juan Martin del Potro, after the Argentinian insulted his mother. A month later he was reprimanded for his language during a last-16 tie at Wimbledon, while in 2006, the British Davis Cup team was fined £1,434 after Murray swore at an umpire during a doubles match.
In his autobiography, Hitting Back, Murray said swearing was a way for him to let off steam, but admitted he was trying to control his outbursts.
“I do swear sometimes towards my box,” he said. “If you’re getting mad, you’re getting pretty uncomfortable and all I’m basically doing is looking for a bit of comfort from them.
"I know swearing isn’t the right thing to do and I have tried to stop it, but I’m never going to be on court not saying a word. Sometimes you need to let off steam.”

who cares? he is a brilliant tennis player and a pleasure to watch. at least he doesn't ignore balls that the ballboys send him (like del potro) and he doesn't expect the ballboys/girls to fetch his towel every time.
henman ws the best brit since fred perry. murray looks like being even better!
grindles, london, england
I'm not excusing his swearing but let's not single him out. Roddick swore more than Murray during their match. Simon swore a fair bit today also-in French of course. A little perspective. Murray wasn't swearing at his opponent. You'll hear far worse on a football pitch every SINGLE w/end.
Lyn, Glasgow, Scotland
Big deal. People still love McEnroe: His oath-filled tirades (even today in EXHIBITION matches) make AM look like Mary Poppins. If the umpire wants to deduct pts for unsporting behavior, ok. But he's not a menace to society b/c he swears. I don't even like him generally, but this story is tedious.
Brett, Wilmington, DE, USA
Murray is a WINNER, fellow Britons! Yes I know it's a shock and we have to find ways to disown him..for after all we we love the gallant sporting losers in this country.
I think he's great and its a pity a more of our pampered male tennis players - doyens of the Beckenham set - don't have his grit
Brian Fargher, Birmingham, West Midlands
Andy Murray gets enough stick from the ungrateful people in this country already without this to encourage them.
L , York,
So, is it now impossible in Britain to have a sportman who can be competitive and a winner without the need for foul mouthing.? There is no need for it, it doesn't improve the game and it shows the person for what they are. Those who enjoy vulgarity will always make such comments as they do.
Branston Pittle, Telford,
Sorry Armand, we may be self depricating, but there are plenty good sportsmen and women in the UK. Oh and I forgot - how did the Olympics go for you then?
Nick Brown, Edinburgh,
Murray is a highly skilled player, but he also acts like an obnoxious, petulant and spoilt yobbo. Players ought to be docked points for such behaviour.
Chris K, Cheltenham, UK
Jose please give me an example of Murray being obnoxious. Just because he swears at himself when he's frustrated does not make him a brat. Are you a Fernando Alonso fan by any chance? there's no sports man who is as much of a brat as him.
L, York,
jose, Murray lives in Spain and has done for years. He learnt how to act there. Next you will be saying Alonso knows something about how to behave as a sportsman.
doug, London,
Henrietta, he's Scottish.
NM, Glasgow, Scotland
Murray is an obnoxious brat, shame you British use him as a sporting role model, he should be sent to Siberia for a couple of weeks. That would soon knock some sense into him
José, Madrid, Spain
Concentrate on the tennis rather than the language, a silly article to write considering the quality we saw from Murray today.
Rob, Newbury, UK
you poms are always moaning about not having good enough sportspeople. Now that you have one, your just trying to bring him down. No pleasing you lot is there?
Armand Tamzarian, Australia,
It makes the guy more interesting, instead of starring at his bland appearance! If he is well mannered he is boring! If he swears he is a poor role model! Media life has to be tough for him!
Dres, London,
Borg was the greatest tennis player and ambassador of the game, no emotion or childish behaviour, just got on with it, win or lose.
Tony, Toronto, Canada
We just don't like winners, do we? It's the same with Lewis Hamilton.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Murray has proved he does NOT deserve to win. He should be banned from the game by the Lawn Tennis Association.
San Ying, Montreal, Canada
he's a fine role model! how can one insult Murray when our society is based around morally inept footballers?
dave, bristol,
Its just double standards. What is the name of that gordon ramsey cooking (I said cooking) programme that is so popular?
Richard, Penrith,
Who really cares? I only care about the result.
Get over it...
Jamie, London,
At last we get a really good Brit player - what a pity it has to be this one. What a role model!
Henrietta, Reading,
Just an everyday part of British life which marks us out as wonderfully different from other countries!
As Andiio would say...'get a life'
Hope you don't notice my hint of sarcasm
Jazz, Cheltenham, UK
Andiio, did you know that Murray survived the Dunblane school massacre...?
...possibly not the best of analogies to use...
Ben, Winchester, UK
leave him swear. Its only a word. Not as if hes getting out a pistol and shooting the crowd with it.
Andiio, cardiff, UK
