Has Tommy Haas got any chance at all against Roger Federer?
It is very hard to make a case for the German. The pair share the same agent and practise together regularly. Add that to the fact they have both been on the world tour for most of the last decade, and there won’t be too many secrets on Centre Court. They have met 11 times and Federer has only failed to win on two occasions, the most recent of those defeats coming seven and a half years ago. Less than a month ago Haas was two sets to the good in the French Open fourth round and then crumbled against the Swiss, winning only six games in the three concluding sets. Clay would most certainly have given Haas more of a chance than grass and the Swiss is in the zone, having dropped only one set and that in a tie-break. Haas has had to survive a few testing battles and his good fortune would appear to be spent.
Do you think Federer looks a happier player knowing that Nadal's not at Wimbledon this year?
Far be it from any of us to disbelieve somebody who could well be the greatest champion of all time, but he insisted he was disappointed that his great rival would not be able to defend the title he won a year ago. However, an air of total contentment and confidence has exuded from Federer since he acted as Nadal’s Centre Court substitute on Day One of the Championships at 1pm. His quarter-final win against the potentially frightening Ivo Karlovic suggested he is totally in what players call ‘the zone’ and it will take a stunning player to beat him. Perhaps Federer is thinking that in such form it’s a shame Nadal is not here because he would have a perfect opportunity to redress some of the balance against the man from Majorca.
All the hype will be about the battle of the Andys - will Roddick prove Murray's toughest test yet?
Almost certainly, but will Roddick’s best still be good enough to unhinge Murray? The match-up of the two styles seems to favour the Scot. Roddick has a serve to splatter most but Murray’s return game is superb as his 6-2 record in the head-to-head record between the pair suggests. Certainly Roddick is a more complete player than the sad and demoralised figure that trudged away from Wimbledon three years ago after the still teenage Scot sent him packing from round three in straight sets. He is fitter, lighter and faster but there is still not a significant Plan B to his hard hitting game which is total contrast to the Murray game that has so much variety and potential.
And your prediction for the semi-final scores?
Federer to beat Haas in straight sets; Murray to beat Roddick in four with the American quite possibly winning the first.
