What was the best moment of your career?
When you start playing tennis you dream about winning a Grand Slam, so the first victory is a huge thing for a player. Winning the French Open in 1974 was important for me. I also had two other dreams, to play in the Davis Cup and in the main draw at Wimbledon. Those were also big things for me, as was winning my first Wimbledon title at the age of 20 in 1976. I did not think I could win it at such a young age. And then, of course, winning the fifth title at Wimbledon in 1980 when I beat John McEnroe. It is tough to separate them. I also had an unbelievable match against Vitas Gerulaitis in the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 1977. After that Vitas and I became close friends and would practise against each other before Grand Slam tournaments.
Who was the best opponent you played against?
The best competitors and rivals were John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors. We always produced good tennis, which was not only satisfying for us but also for those watching. They were very different players. Style-wise, McEnroe was the more aggressive. Jimmy played a bit like me, building up from the baseline and then coming into the net. Temper-wise, they both had a good temper. It was a great mix because I was the quiet one and they showed a lot of emotion. People like that. If all the players behave in the same way, it would be boring. It was easy for people to relate to a tennis match between us.
What was the best thing about being a player in your era?
I had a big heart for tennis. I loved to win; hated to lose. Every time I walked onto the court, I wanted to win every point and gained satisfaction winning matches, tournaments and the Grand Slam events.
What was the worst thing about being a player?
Losing. You have to learn to lose, especially in big finals.
Who is the best player today?
I enjoy the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, which is good for tennis. The emergence of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick as challengers takes tennis to a different level and that is what the sport needs.
What is the best thing about the game today?
The way they play. They don’t have any weaknesses and can play on all surfaces. They can do anything with a tennis racket, which is why I enjoy watching.
What is the worst thing about the game today?
Players are playing too much. The demands and money are huge and because they are playing so much, they are getting injured.
Who was your best coach?
Lennart Bergelin. He did so many things for me. He was a good player and travelled around the world in his time. He gave me a lot of advice about what to do and not to do and was a big help. He taught me many positive and good things even outside the court.
What was the best advice you were given?
Lennart taught me to be professional. If you want to be a good player you have to focus on what you are doing: practise, eat and sleep, and play tennis. That’s what Lennart and I did. I loved tennis but if you really want to be successful, you have to be professional about it. I learnt that when I was very young and it was good advice.
Outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments, which was the best event?
I enjoyed the tournament in Monte Carlo, because I was living there at the time, and the two Swedish tournaments in Bastad and Stockholm. You always want to win tournaments in your own country so they were very special for me.
Where are you now?
I am involved in the Bjorn Borg clothing company, which I have been doing for 15 years. The company is doing really well. I like to stay home with my family in Sweden. I still play tennis for exercise. I love the sport and love playing. Maybe in the future there will be an opportunity to take care of some of the Swedish juniors and to help Swedish tennis. I have been playing on the senior tour for the past three years, which is a lot of fun. I am going to play one more tournament this year, in China in November. It will be my last one because, at 53, I am getting a bit old compared with the other guys who are playing.
