Roger Federer, who has astonished and amused at Wimbledon crowds in recent years by stepping on to court in a white blazer, intends to wear a herringbone-patterned cardigan at this year's finals.
Announced yesterday by his sponsor, Nike, the designer, of the garment, apparently spent many hours in the Wimbledon museum and used British manufacturers for “a truly British connection”. It is odd, too, see an American firm employing a Swiss man to capture British sporting heritage, but quite understandable when our only marketable star is Andy Murray, a man with the elegance of Stig of the Dump.
Tennis clothing has long been fashionable in a way that football strips could never be. There is an historical association that dates back to Fred Perry, and an even stronger modern connection that has brought female players such as Maria Sharapova on to the catwalk.
Federer's new cardigan, with its herringbone pattern, is in that same tradition, though I fear it veers into farce. The inscription on the five buttons refers to his five victories: a self-congratulatory refrain that is deeply unattractive in a tennis player.
Rafael Nadal must be outraged, in a competitive sense, and at least in a straightforward fashion sense, for the Spaniard's style centres on trendy Bermuda-length shorts. The cardigan has been considered extremely cool - but that was two years ago. If Federer wins again, it will be even more dated, for they will have to redesign the motif on the five buttons, and somehow find room for a sixth.

Roger Federer brought Class back to Tennis Wear with his beautiful Cardigan!
His cream colored Pants looked great too.
Thanks Roger. You are a Class act.

I think Roger looks beautiful, he epitomises the word stylish, much nicer than Raf's trashy Bermudas.

i think this cardigan is ace, im also verybiassed as it was my brother qho designed it :) very proud of him.
hannah, preston, england
"..a self-congratulatory refrain that is deeply unattractive in a tennis player."- the design was probably all nike's. if you hadn't noticed federer is the very last guy who would make any arrogant statements - explains in part his huge popularity. he's in a class of his own. a true tennis genius.

I agree with the author completely. I laughed out loud when Roger walked on to center court in that sweater, as I did last year when he walked on in pants that zipped up the back. I find both Federer's hubris and fashion sense deeply unattractive.
Kay, Austin, USA
Roger Federer is one of the most stylish men around! Love the cardigan and loved his navy shirt, shorts and shoes at the French Open even more! Nadal's shorts may look great on Spanish teenagers on the beach, but they look strange & uncomfortable on the tennis court; not a good look at all!

This reporter is extremely biased and do not permit the reader to make up his/her own mind on the issue.

There is bad fashion and then there is swiss fashion. Switzerland, the vacuum of styles. Having lived there for 4 years I came to understand the phrase, The land the fashion forgot
tom, London, UK
Great, we needed to knw this and on with the Charge of the Light Brigade.

"...a self-congratulatory refrain that is deeply unattractive in a tennis player"? Just what are you talking about? And, the cardigan is outdated but Nadal's shorts are trendy? Who says? In case you haven't heard, Federer is world no. 1 for the past 4-1/2 years. Go write about something else pls.
