As one charity last week warned thousands of gap-year travellers that their volunteer holidays may be spurious and badly planned, further evidence has emerged of placement agencies charging high fees from travellers wishing to work in the developing world.
Kate Hardyment from London applied directly to the Ghanaian work-camp project Volu, paying £135 for her four-week stay. On arrival, she found other volunteers had paid UK-based agencies up to £1,000 for identical placements a mark-up of 600%.
Placement agencies justify the disparity by providing support services such as overseas staff, 24-hour helplines and predeparture orientation courses, but many volunteers claim this isn’t worth the extra cost.
Travellers Worldwide charges £995 for a month’s placement in Ghana. Of that, about £40 goes into a charitable trust and an undisclosed sum goes towards food and lodging. The rest, says managing director Mike Ecclestone, is eaten up by overheads.
One of the most successful UK agencies is I-to-I, owned by the holiday giant First Choice, and the company freely admits that it is in business to make a profit.
“We are a tour operator, and we facilitate volunteering by finding sustainable projects worldwide and sending people to take part in them,” said the company’s Jo Little.
I-to-I offers four-week placements in Ghana from £795. Asked to justify the additional cost of several hundred pounds, Little said: “What you are paying for is the service you receive. Yes, you can do it a lot cheaper by going direct, but we provide security, peace of mind and a hand-holding service for those who haven’t travelled alone before.”
Volunteer Josh Everard also went direct. “I can understand why people would want that backup, but in my case, the only difference was a 24-hour helpline and a T-shirt,” he said.
Last week, the international development charity VSO advised young people who are taking a gap year abroad that it may be better for them to travel rather than take up voluntary work in developing countries.
Recent reports have revealed a number of projects to be somewhat less than worthwhile. These include a cheetah-tagging project in South Africa using inert radio collars and a turtle census in Central America that counts the same turtles every week.

Have have just returned from a volunteer project with i-to-i in which we were informed by the inland coordinators that they only recieve 42% of what we pay to i-to-i. Furthermore, out of that 42% nothing goes directly to the projects. i-to-i only donate money on a yearly basis to projects that are recomended by volunteers. While I was in Tanzania, volunteers were using money they had raised themselves to build schools and pay for students an education. This seems obsurd because we pay such a large amount of money to i-to-i. It is heartbreaking to see 130 pupils crambed into a small building when all the project needs is £800 to build a new classroom.

To hear that some gap year companies are charging such high mark ups is really concering. However, I think all 'gappers' realise that they are going to pay a mark up of some sort, as this is how gap year companies exist.
However, I think it's really important to find out exactly what your money is going on. As long as the company you use are open and honest about where your money is going to, and are happy to show you a full cost break down then you are able to see why you are paying a mark up, adn check that it is in fact worthwhile. I was very happy with the gap year company I went away with, Quest, and I felt happy organising my gap year through them as they were very clear about exactly where and how much of my money was going on what. A large part of the money I paid was a donation which went directly to the project which I was working on in Tanzania.

Thankyou for highlighting these outragous scams. The companies involved should be ashamed, especially as they market these trips with so many misleading lies. I cant believe that such tiny amounts actually go to the communities that need the donations so much, and it also exploits those who are trying to give something back, and unaware of the facts. Please keep this story in the public eye, and hopefully you can help to change this unjust system. I would also love to read any articles with websites for real voluntary charities, that really do care about these people who have so little. Many thanks,
Lucy Snelling, London,
