EGYPT
The massacre of 58 tourists at Luxor in 1997 was followed by an effective government crackdown, but the past 12 months have seen a series of attacks, including bombings in resorts on the Sinai peninsula, a blast at a Cairo market and a gun attack on a Cairo tourist bus, which together have killed at least 120 people. A range of small Islamic groups has claimed responsibility. One, Tawhid and Jihad, has claimed to be behind last week’s Sharm el Sheikh attack.

In October 2002, Jemaah Islamiya, a group with links to Al-Qaeda, detonated bombs in the tourist town of Kuta, Bali, killing 202 and injuring more than 300. Subsequent arrests have weakened the group, but it is still thought to be active across Southeast Asia.

In Casablanca, in May 2003, a suicide bomber from an unknown group attacked the Hotel Fara, which is popular with westerners. Two staff died.
SPAIN
ETA, the Basque separatist group, has been responsible for a series of bomb attacks on tourist targets since 2003, causing at least 13 injuries. The group’s strategy has long included strikes against the country’s tourist industry. Eight were injured by one blast in Alicante in July 2003.
THAILAND
In May 2004, Bersatu, a terrorist group campaigning for independence for the Muslim minority in southern Thailand, warned tourists to avoid Phuket. In April 2005, an unknown group exploded a bomb in front of the Dream World Hotel in Songkhla.

A week before, 21 people, including one Briton, were injured by a bomb in the resort of Cesme.
