Page 2: Plymouth Royal Navy show
()All action as the Navy stages a show
THE NAVY will be even more dominant in Plymouth over the August Bank Holiday weekend when the gates of Devonport Naval Base open for the biennial Navy Days.
A dozen Royal Navy ships and submarines and vessels from overseas navies will be at the event, which gives visitors a rare chance to see at first hand how sailors live and work while away from the UK and to talk to members of ships’ companies about their work. The event will also give visitors a chance to find out about plans for the Navy of tomorrow.
A highlight of the three days starting on August 26 will be a dramatic display involving Royal Marine Commandos, HMS Monmouth and a Lynx helicopter enacting an anti-terror mission in the River Tamar. Also taking to the skies will be the Royal Navy’s award-winning Black Cats helicopter display team, the Royal Navy historic flight and the Blue Eagles, the Army’s helicopter display team.
John Inverdale and a BBC team will invite visitors to try their hand at presenting the news, sport and weather and a Royal Marine chef will prepare dishes from the deep.
Classic Cottages has properties in reach of Plymouth for visitors to the Navy Days, including a late-Victorian cottage for three in the Cornish village of Landrake, eight miles from the city, which costs £489 for a week from August 26. A flat for two, with use of a snooker table, tennis court and croquet lawn at Chillaton on the edge of Dartmoor costs £396 for the same week, and a converted barn for two near Callington, Cornwall, and the Tamar, is £458 for a week from August 25.
Just across the river from Plymouth, Cawsand Bay Hotel offers B&B from £40 a night and Cornish Traditional Cottages has a house for two with sea views at Downderry for £476 for a week from August 26.
