The D-Day landings might seem a long time ago but, as the 65th anniversary approaches, we should still remember the events that secured the freeddom of these isles. And one of the best ways to do so is to visit the memorials and museums along the Normandy coast of France.

Events are taking place from late May into mid-June, especially over the weekend of June 6-7, with the most notable at Arromanches, home to the D-Day Museum, but also at Omaha Beach, where the annual picnic takes place on the Sunday.

Inntravel has a weekend break starting on June 5 and based at the Hotel Le Romantica, overlooking the Seine estuary and a few miles from the pretty harbour town of Honfleur, where a parade and remembrance ceremony will take place on June 7. The visit costs £190 with a Dover-Calais crossing with a car and half-board at the hotel, which has an excellent restaurant and indoor pool and is within comfortable driving distance of the D-Day beaches.

Great Escapes also has packages to the hotel until the end of June, with prices starting from £113 for two nights' B&B and a P&O Channel crossing with a car, based on four travelling. The company has deals at some two and three-star hotels in Bayeux, Clécy, Honfleur and Deauville but availability is limited because of the interest in the D-Day commemorations.
