Five-star cabins
The Slovenian mountains are scattered with traditional wooden cabins, shelters for cowherds and climbers. From a distance the four huts which comprise the guesthouse Nebesa look much the same. But inside it’s as if the pages of Elle Decoration have been interpreted 900m up Mount Kuk, amid the unspoilt grandeur of the Triglav National Park.
The guesthouse, run by Katja Ros, a Slovenian journalist and her doctor husband, has won architectural awards. The couple built the four self-contained apartments next to their own glass, steel and wooden home high above the town of Kobarid. With as many designer details as a Manhattan loft — glass and blond wood, Italian light fittings, trendy bathrooms and decking — they are also very comfortable and make the most of the thrilling views above the morning clouds. Although billed as two-person cabins, my husband and I slept in a mezzanine bedroom with our sons on a sofabed in the living room below.
There is a pool and sauna in a communal building attached to the couple’s house. The guesthouse does not serve food, but the price includes basic breakfast supplies and guests are invited to help themselves to delicious local hams and cheeses in the cellar. Katja’s daughter owns Hisa Franko (www.hisafranko.com), a cordon bleu, organic restaurant which serves vegetables from its own gardens, down in Kobarid.
Need to know: Guesthouse Nebesa: 00 386 5 3844620, www.nebesa.si. From £151 per apartment for the first night; reduced rates for longer stays.
