The Lake District beat competition from Northumberland, the Gower Peninsula and The Mountains of Mourne in County Down, to win the title of Britain's favourite view in a recent televised contest.
The winning vista was Wastwater, a narrow lake that stretches three miles along the floor of the Wasdale Valley and is overshadowed by mountains including Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike, which is England's highest mountain.
For weekenders who want to see this award-winning landscape and other striking Cumbrian views, there are a number of B&Bs dotted throughout the Lake District.
Here are ten of the best with the greatest views:
WASTWATER
You don’t have to leave your bed to appreciate the views of Wasdale from Rainors Farm B&B (tel. 019467 25934 or info@rainorsfarm.co.uk), which has three guest rooms and a yurt that sleeps up to five people in luxury bohemian surroundings. Proprietors John and Debbie Hughes offer hearty breakfast and packed lunches, and charge from £40 per person per night for a single room and from £65 for a double or from £300 for three nights in the yurt.
CONISTON
One of the many famous guests to visit Yew Tree Farm (tel. 015394 41433 info@yewtree-farm.co.uk), Coniston, was Renee Zellweger, who shot several scenes from the movie Miss Potter at the farm, which doubled as Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop home in the biopic. As well as a working 500-acre beef and sheep farm and tea shop within walking distance of the Tarns Hows beauty spot, Yew Tree is now a stylish B&B after extensive refurbishment in 2007. Two of the three double bedrooms have four poster beds and rooms cost from £45 per person per night including a breakfast of locally sourced goodies. As for the views, it is one of the most photographed farms in the Lake District due to its backdrop of the Coniston fell range. A day ticket for fly-fishing for the neighbouring Yew Tree Tarn is also available.
TROUTBECK
In the tranquil village of Troutbeck lies one of the Lake District’s most peaceful and spectacular valleys, three miles from Lake Windermere. At Highfold B&B (tel. 015394 32200, info@highfoldbedandbreakfast.co.uk), which is popular with walkers and cyclists, you can take in the views from all five bedrooms of High Street – not of shops, banks and post offices, but the High Street mountain range. The Troutbeck valley and Applethwaite lie to the east, the peaks of Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick lie to the north east, while to the north is Park Fell, Kirkstone Pass, the High Street range and the route of a Roman road. Rooms cost from £34 to £45 per person per night.
MUNGRISDALE
Steve and Jill Woolley run the four-star Near Howe Guest House (tel. 017687 79678, enquiries@nearhowe.co.uk) and self catering cottages which occupy an elevated position on a tree lined knoll near the village of Mungrisdale. Near Howe stands alone in 380 acres of farmland between two of the most popular places to visit in the Lakes: it is eight miles from Keswick and seven miles from Ullswater. The five bedrooms, which include two family rooms, are named after local villages, and there are five cottages that sleep between four and seven people. Bedrooms cost from £25 per person per night and cottages from £70 per cottage per night.
