Beer: at the top of the lane that leads down to the beach, the Anchor Inn (01297 20386) offers fresh seafood, real ales and wonderful views of the Jurassic Coast. Doubles from £85.
Studland Bay: one of the handful of top hotels that cater for families, Knoll House Hotel (01929 450450) sprawls among pine woods a short walk from the Côte d’Azur ambience of Knoll Beach. Seaward-looking rooms start at £114pp.
Bexhill: just across the road from the De La Warr Pavilion, and famous for its Friday-night supper club, is Dunselma (01424 734144), an Edwardian guesthouse that offers four sea-view rooms. Nos 2 and 6 are the best. From £60 a night.
WEEK FIVE: Weston-super-Mare to Salcombe
Tintagel: if you’re spooked by eccentricity, stay away from Camelot
Castle Hotel (01840 770202, www.camelotcastle.com
), a genial pile, high above the ruined castle that was the legendary
birthplace of King Arthur. A seaview room at Camelot starts at £49.
Zennor: don’t be put off by the name - the Old Chapel (01736 798307, www.zennorbackpackers.co.uk
) is a tranquil delight with a terrific family room for £55 a night. The
Tinners Arms is next door, and there’s gourmet dining up the hill at the

Cottage (01326 290436, www.kynancecovecottage.co.uk
) - is available to rent. It’s booked up until September this year, when it
costs £400 for a week; this week next year is available for £625.

John, Bangkok, Thailand
Were you in too much of a hurry to get back into Devon that you missed some of the best parts of Cornwall? I would suggest that Maenporth beach, just south of Falmouth, and some of the small beaches in and around the Fal estuary are well worth visiting. Otherwise, I agree with your comments.
Paul, Birmingham,
This series gets funnier - and more acerbic - the more vinegar he drinks. Newquay is indeed a trollop, and anyone who new Watergate before the stylists arrived will agree with his description. Chris Haslam is becoming to travel what Gill is to eating.
Fred Thomas, Southampton,
'a worn-out old trollop sprawling across two fine beaches like an overweight Essex bird in a too-tight Billabong T-shirt'
Outstanding description of present day Newquay; a resort ruined by it's own popularity and now merely a chav's retreat. It wasn't always this way.....
